Associations between hypertension and cognitive, mood, and behavioral parameters in very old adults: Results from the IlSirente study
Introduction: Studies on the associations between hypertension-related parameters and cognitive function, mood, and behavioral symptoms in older adults have produced mixed findings. A possible explanation for these divergent results is that investigations have not adequately adjusted their analyses according to the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs). Therefore, the present study examined the cross-sectional associations betwe…
Lower-Limb Muscle Power Is Negatively Associated with Protein Intake in Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study
The present study examined the association between lower-limb muscle power and protein-related parameters in older adults. This study followed a cross-sectional design. Participants were community-dwelling older adults. Candidates were considered eligible if they were 60 years or older, lived independently, and possessed sufficient physical and cognitive abilities to perform all the measurements required by the protocol. The 5 times sit-to-stand …
International Exercise Recommendations in Older Adults (ICFSR): Expert Consensus Guidelines
The human ageing process is universal, ubiquitous and inevitable. Every physiological function is being continuously diminished. There is a range between two distinct phenotypes of ageing, shaped by patterns of living - experiences and behaviours, and in particular by the presence or absence of physical activity (PA) and structured exercise (i.e., a sedentary lifestyle). Ageing and a sedentary lifestyle are associated with declines in muscle func…
Persistent Symptoms in Patients After Acute Covid-19
case rate of 587 per 100 000. The crude COVID-19 death rate in prisons was 39 deaths per 100 000 prisoners, which was higher than the US population rate of 29 deaths 100 000 (Table). However, individuals aged 65 years or older comprised a smaller share of the prison population than of the US population (3% vs 16%, respectively) and accounted for 81% of COVID-19 deaths in the US population. The Table provides a standardized calculation showing tha…
Psychological Distress After Covid-19 Recovery: Reciprocal Effects With Temperament and Emotional Dysregulation. An Exploratory Study of Patients Over 60 Years of Age Assessed in a Post-acute Care Ser…
To study the long-term psychological effects of Covid-19 disease, we recruited 61 patients older than 60 years of age and administered the Kessler questionnaire K10 to assess psychological distress and classify them according to mental health risk groups. Patients' affective temperaments were assessed with the 39-item form of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego (TEMPS-A-39) and emotional dysregulation with the Diffic…
Factors affecting safe and healthy diet in older adults in Italy: Results of a preliminary study performed in a community-dwelling sample
Objective: To investigate, through a questionnaire, older adults’ demographic and socio-economic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and practices in terms of food safety and healthy diet; and to develop dietary and hygiene indices able to represent participants’ nutritional and food safety behaviour, exploring their association with demographic and socio-economic factors. Design: One-year cross-sectional study. Setting: Gemelli Teaching Hospit…
Sarcopenia: Revised European consensus on definition and diagnosis
Background: in 2010, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) published a sarcopenia definition that aimed to foster advances in identifying and caring for people with sarcopenia. In early 2018, the Working Group met again (EWGSOP2) to update the original definition in order to reflect scientific and clinical evidence that has built over the last decade. This paper presents our updated findings. Objectives: to increase co…
Sarcopenia: Revised European consensus on definition and diagnosis
doi: 10.1093/ageing/afy169 In the original version of the above paper there was an error in Table 3, which shows the recommended cut-off points for ASM/height2 in women. The cut-off point was given as <6.0 kg/m2, but the correct value is <5.5 kg/m2. This has now been corrected online. The authors wish to apologise for this error.
Sarcopenia: European consensus on definition and diagnosis
The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) developed a practical clinical definition and consensus diagnostic criteria for age-related sarcopenia. EWGSOP included representatives from four participant organisations, i.e. the European Geriatric Medicine Society, the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism, the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics—European Region and the International Associa…
Minimum Data Set for Home Care: A Valid Instrument to Assess Frail Older People Living in the Community
BACKGROUND: Optimal care for frail elderly patients depends on comprehensive assessment. This is especially true in the complex setting of interdisciplinary home care programs. To facilitate comprehensive assessment, as well as to generate a useful, policy-relevant patient database, standardized, multidimensional, and validated instruments are very helpful. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to demonstrate that the Minimum Data Set asse…
Validity of Diagnostic and Drug Data in Standardized Nursing Home Resident Assessments: Potential for Geriatric Pharmacoepidemiology
OBJECTIVES: The Health Care Financing Administration requires that patients admitted to certified nursing homes be assessed with the Minimum Data Set, a data collection instrument containing more than 300 demographic, diagnostic, clinical, and treatment variables. Long-term care databases potentially may be used to assess the outcomes of specific treatments as well as drug effectiveness. The authors sought to ascertain reliability and validity of…
