Restoring the Human Voice to Oral History
The digital revolution is giving oral historians exciting new ways to record, index, search, and share oral history interviews with larger and more remote audiences. The Illinois State Museum’s Oral History of Illinois Agriculture (OHIA) project used an array of digital methods and tools to develop an interactive website, called the Audio-Video Barn , which gives voice to people involved in agriculture and rural life in Illinois. The OHIA approac…

Prehistoric Community Patterns
Analysis of Vertebrate Remains
Chronology of the Preceramic Period
Conclusions
Digital enhancement and grey‐level slicing of aerial photographs
Interpretive problems often arise during the analysis of aerial photographs of archaeological sites when unwanted background variation obscures the signatures of cultural features. A three‐step approach was used to control soil moisture variation in a large Mississippian village in the midwestern United States, so that locations of house remains could be mapped from aerial photographs. Infrared aerials of a ground‐mapped control block were digiti…
Regional Sample Stratification
Purposive regional sampling strata formulations are often inadequately defined in the literature, or are not based on objective, replicable, and formal criteria. The drainage class technique of strata formulation meets these criteria, yet is simple to apply, generates mapped strata directly, and makes use of topographic information commonly available in the United States. Statistical tests indicate drainage class strata covary significantly with …
