Availability of federally qualified health centers in Latinx communities
Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are a key source of safety net healthcare in the U.S., and much of the patient population of FQHCs identifies as racial or ethnic minorities. Latinx individuals are overrepresented in the patient population of FQHCs, and this group exhibits increasing geographic diversity in places of residence over time. This study investigates associations between FQHC availability and two Latinx community attributes: …
Locating and orienting facilities with anisotropic coverage
Siting facilities strategically is critical to ensure system design efficiency, enhance social equity and reduce operational costs. Coverage models look to optimize facility configuration, often to minimize the number of necessary facilities or maximize demand served within established proximity standards. Existing location models, such as maximal covering, often assume facility standards to be isotropic, resulting in a perceived circular service…
Geographic Fire Response Standards Emerging from Human–Environment Interactions
Natural and man-made disasters are generally characterized in terms of their human–environment interactions. Wildfire, or simply fire, is something that has naturally occurred over millions of years, but it is the interaction, disruption, and impact on humans that often generates much interest and concern. The growth of the built environment and human reliance on fire in everyday life can be a dangerous combination, putting people and property at…
Maximum unobstructed shortest path between multipart-continuous geometries
Balancing Workloads through Co‐location in Covering Problems
Total demand suitably served and facility workload balance are two important considerations in location coverage. Previous work has dealt with workload balancing issues using a number of approaches, including imposing facility capacities and the use of multiple objectives focused on workload variation. However, a facility is usually restricted to a single service unit, inconsistent with strategies that allow for increased staffing such as multipl…
Mapping 3-D classroom seats based on partial object point cloud completion
3-D classroom seating information is of great significance in a host of planning contexts including indoor navigation and facility management. Mapping classroom 3-D seats based on a single-view LiDAR scan is challenging because of occlusions and viewpoint limitations. In essence, one is left with incomplete point clouds, making object recognition difficult. The aim of this paper is to acquire complete point clouds for objects in a room based on a…
Locating a facility to simultaneously address access and coverage goals
This paper introduces a bi‐objective strategic location problem to address access and coverage. While previous research in continuous location modelling considered access coverage independently, none has approached such a problem in an integrated fashion. In this paper, a new mathematical formulation considering access and coverage is derived, and a solution algorithm to find the entire set of optimal tradeoff solutions is developed. Application …
Slums amidst Ghost Cities
Contrasting elements of China's “urban sickness” are empty new apartment complexes abutting dilapidated but overcrowded structures. While scholarship has explored these issues separately, we show their common presence even in the least likely of cities. Why are ghost cities and slums simultaneously on the rise in China? Analysis of eight of China's “ghostliest” cities and in-depth case studies demonstrate how the pursuit of quantified targets gen…
Overview of Contributions in Geographical Analysis
The academic contributions of Waldo Tobler are noteworthy and significant, spanning essentially all disciplines that involve the study of geographic phenomena. While much attention has been given to his observations of the first law of geography, there is much more substance to his larger body of research. It is especially fitting that this commemorative special issue is appearing in Geographical Analysis as Tobler published extensively in the jo…
