  • En avgift som ikke traff spesielt godt»

    Open Access•Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Arbeiderhistorie•2026

    Open Access•Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Arbeiderhistorie•2025•References: 4

    Open Access•Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Arbeiderhistorie•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 4

    Open Access•Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Heimen•2023

    Open Access•Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Arbeiderhistorie•2022•Cited by: 1

  • Minstelønnsloven for underordnede handelsfolk 1918–1925

    Open Access•Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Arbeiderhistorie•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Det fantes likevel to minstelønnslover vedtatt i 1918. Her behandles den midlertidige minstelønnsloven for…

  • Insurance cartels and state policies in Norway, 1870s–1990s

    Open Access•Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•2020

This paper analyses the prolonged nature of two related cartels in life and non-life insurance, in Norway. Insurance cartels and the role of the state are rarely studied in cartel research, although such cartels are common. Cartels played an important role in creating trust and stability in the formative years of the Norwegian insurance industry. In life insurance, premiums are paid sometimes decades in advance. Reducing high transaction costs ca…

  • Pensjonstrygden for statens arbeidere blir til (1917–1951)

    Open Access•Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Arbeiderhistorie•2020•References: 2

  • The Beginnings of Modern Collective Occupational Pensions in Business in Scandinavia, Ca. 1900–1930

    Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2019•Cited by: 1

The first three decades of the 20th century marked the beginning of modern collective occupational pensions for salaried business employees in the three Scandinavian countries. Pension premiums were derived from actuarial principles and pension entitlement was financially and legally secured. Relatively few salaried business employees were covered by these new occupational pension schemes until the 1930s. There were similar developments as well a…

  • Statens arbeideres tjenestepensjoner (1814–1917)

    Open Access•Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Arbeiderhistorie•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Her behandles alders-, uføre- og enkepensjoner.

  • ‘Cooperation on a purely matter-of-fact basis’

    Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•2014

Recent publications have addressed the issue of the financial contribution of occupied countries to the German war economy from 1939 until 1945. Occupied countries contributed between 25 and 30% of the total German war costs. According to recent calculations, the Norwegian contribution has been between 6 and 7% of the occupied countries' total contribution; per capita the Norwegian war tribute was twice the average of the occupied West-European c…

  • Economic Consequences Of The German Occupation Of Norway, 1940–1945

    Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Since the liberation from the German occupation of 1940–1945, the dominant national narrative has been of the far-reaching exploitation and destruction of the Norwegian economy by the occupant forces. The scholarly basis for this narrative was a book written by Odd Aukrust and Petter Jacob Bjerke in 1945. The narrative formed an important basis for the Norwegian variant of economic reconstruction following liberation and has also dominated histor…

  • The German occupation and its consequences for the composition and changes of Norwegian business elites

    Open Access•Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte…•2010

The German occupation had dramatic consequences on the pre-war political and military elites in Norway, due to the ways in which they behaved during German rule. These elites were almost completely replaced by a younger generation of men. The occupation had no comparable effect on prewar business elites. In light of the pre-war economic elites’ extensive economic collaboration with the Germans starting immediately after the occupation, a differen…

  • Prelude to Extreme Protectionism? Norwegian Agricultural Protectionism in a West-European Context, 1850–1940

    Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•2008

The topic of the article is to offer a new interpretation of the history of Norway's agricultural protectionism in a West-European context. Agricultural protectionism was not deeply rooted economically, politically or institutionally prior to the Second World War. Before the First World War the most commercially oriented part of Norwegian agriculture – milk production and the dairy industry – was export-oriented. Norway was the last country to jo…

  • Protectionism, lobbying and innovation. perspectives on the development of the Norwegian textile industry, especially since 1940

    Harald Espeli•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Economic History…•1997

Since the 1950s the Norwegian textile industry has experienced a prolonged decline that has been more marked than in other OECD countries. In trying to explain this decline the author emphasizes path dependence or the importance of history and political factors. Since the late 1890s the Norwegian textile industry seems to have worked more assiduosly to gain protection than to adjust and be innovative in relation to changing market conditions and …
