Contingency discrimination training and resurgence
Resurgence is an increase in a suppressed target behavior following a worsening of conditions for a more recently reinforced alternative behavior. Prior research shows that exposure to equal‐duration sessions of alternative reinforcement availability versus unavailability during treatment (i.e., contingency discrimination training; CDT) reduces resurgence. Clinically, minimizing exposure to extinction while maintaining the resurgence‐mitigating e…
Effects of Alcohol Concentration on Choice and Persistence of Alcohol Seeking
Effects of reinforcer probability on attending to element and compound sample stimuli
Previous research has shown that divided‐attention performance is sensitive to variations in relative reinforcement in a manner consistent with the generalized matching law. Two experiments with pigeons were designed to better understand the effects of different reinforcement conditions on divided‐attention performance. Experiment 1 asked whether separate experience with different relative reinforcement probabilities for elements alone would prod…
The extinction burst
Discontinuing reinforcement for an operant behavior sometimes produces a transient increase in responding (i.e., an extinction burst). A matching‐law‐based quantitative model posits that the extinction burst results from the elimination of competition from reinforcement‐related behavior with the onset of extinction. Consistent with this suggestion, retrospective case reviews in applied settings suggest reduced prevalence of the extinction burst w…
Further assessment of a model of changeover behavior
Choice in concurrent schedules is organized in visits to each alternative, and the duration of these visits is exponentially distributed. A model of changeover behavior based on this fact successfully described changeover behavior in two large data sets from published experiments, but some limitations were apparent in this analysis, seemingly reflecting an effect of the passage of time on the data across the lengthy experiments. This article desc…
Punishment and dynamic choice
The effects of punishment rate on response allocation were investigated using a choice procedure where relative reinforcement rates changed rapidly within session. Predictions from a modified version of the direct‐suppression model were tested in two separate experiments. In both experiments, sessions were composed of seven unsignaled components, each programming a different reinforcement ratio. In Experiment 1, equal punishment rates were superi…
The extinction burst
The extinction burst is an increase in an operant behavior early in the transition to extinction. A matching‐law‐based quantitative theory suggests that it results from the elimination of competition from reinforcement‐related behavior that accompanies the transition to extinction. This experiment examined the effects of reinforcement magnitude on the extinction burst with rats. Responding produced either 1 pellet or 6 pellets prior to a within‐s…
