Aids for argumentative synthesis processes and texts for undergraduate students
Evaluating the Performance of R-Squared Measures in Multilevel Models
Multilevel Models (MLMs) have become a valuable tool in the behavioral and social sciences, providing a framework for analyzing clustered data structures commonly encountered in these fields. Unlike single-level regression, R2 measures in MLMs become more intricate due to the need to account for sources of variance at different levels. Recently, Rights and Sterba (Citation2019) introduced an integrative framework of MLM R2 measures, providing a u…
Interpersonal Risk and Protective Factors for Adolescents’ Psychosocial Wellbeing in Secondary Education: A Latent Profile Analysis
Objective: The concept of adolescent wellbeing has emerged as an essential component of adolescent health, occupying a pivotal position within public and policy agendas. While researchers agree that psychosocial wellbeing is a multidimensional construct comprising objective and subjective elements, many studies focus on a single domain or context of wellbeing. This study (1) identifies different profiles of adolescent psychosocial wellbeing (incl…
Are valence and arousal related to the development of amodal representations of words? A computational study
In this study, we analyzed the relationship between the amodal (semantic) development of words and two popular emotional norms (emotional valence and arousal) in English and Spanish languages. To do so, we combined the strengths of semantics from vector space models (vector length, semantic diversity, and word maturity measures), and feature-based models of emotions. First, we generated a common vector space representing the meaning of words at d…
How to improve argumentative syntheses written by undergraduates using guides and instructional rubrics
Undergraduates often struggle writing argumentative syntheses from conflicting sources. Written guides can help in the different phases of the process involved in these tasks and are more effective when accompanied by explicit instruction. Nevertheless, there are few studies on instructional rubrics as an aid to argumentative writing and none are focused on synthesis tasks. Our objectives were to compare (1) the effectiveness of a guide and a rub…
Psychosocial factors that favor citizen participation in the generation of scientific knowledge
Background Citizen participation in the generation of scientific knowledge is one of the major challenges facing science and technology systems. This study takes a psychosocial approach to analyzing the process whereby citizens participate in science. Method A specific questionnaire was answered by 1002 residents of Spain belonging to different age groups, occupations, and education levels. Results Cluster analysis revealed two profiles: a minori…
Intimate partner violence among adolescents: Prevalence rates after one decade of research
INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence research and intervention strategies have grown substantially over the last two decades. However, little research has examined whether the intimate partner prevalence has changed or remained stable over time in Spain. Moreover, few studies have analyzed whether intimate partner violence prevalence rates among genders and age groups have fluctuated similarly or not. METHOD: The aim of this study was to analy…
Quantifying the ideational context: Political frames, meaning trajectories and punctuated equilibria in Spanish mainstream press during the Catalan nationalist challenge
This article presents a quantitative method for mapping semantic spaces and tracing political frames' trajectories, that facilitate the analysis of the connections between changes in ideas and sociopolitical phenomena. We test our approach in Spain, where the Catalan conflict fostered a competition in terms of decontestation of meanings of key political concepts. Using unsupervised machine learning, we track the salience, level of semantic fragme…
Model Selection and Model Averaging for Mixed-Effects Models with Crossed Random Effects for Subjects and Items
A good deal of experimental research is characterized by the presence of random effects on subjects and items. A standard modeling approach that includes such sources of variability is the mixed-effects models (MEMs) with crossed random effects. However, under-parameterizing or over-parameterizing the random structure of MEMs bias the estimations of the Standard Errors (SEs) of fixed effects. In this simulation study, we examined two different bu…

Automated summary evaluation with inbuilt rubric method: An alternative to constructed responses and multiple-choice tests assessments
Automated summary evaluation is proposed as an alternative to rubrics and multiple-choice tests in knowledge assessment. Inbuilt rubric is a recent Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) method that implements rubrics in an artificially-generated semantic space. It was compared with classical LSA’s cosine-based methods assessing knowledge in a within-subjects design regarding two validation sources: a comparison with the results of rubric scores and mult…
Predicting Word Maturity from Frequency and Semantic Diversity: A Computational Study
Semantic word representation changes over different ages of childhood until it reaches its adult form. One method to formally model this change is the word maturity paradigm. This method uses a text sample for each age, including adult age, and transforms the samples into a semantic space by means of Latent Semantic Analysis. The representation of a word at every age is then compared with its adult representation via computational maturity indice…
Transforming Selected Concepts Into Dimensions in Latent Semantic Analysis
This study presents a new approach for transforming the latent representation derived from a Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) space into one where dimensions have nonlatent meanings. These meanings are based on lexical descriptors, which are selected by the LSA user. The authors present three analyses that provide examples of the utility of this methodology. The first analysis demonstrates how document terms can be projected into meaningful new dim…
The case of the Lady of Elche, es el motivo de nuestro escrito.
