Vested Interest Theory as a Framework for Understanding Anthropogenic Climate Change Risk Perceptions
Climate change due to anthropogenic activities is contributing to the systematic warming of Earth. A warming planet represents an existential threat to humanity, contributing to the increased frequency and magnitude of multiple natural hazards. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) notes that time is running out to create meaningful change to avert climate-related consequences. This research posits Vested Interest Theory (VIT)…
Not Zero by 2050: BP and Quid Pro Quo Sustainability
While oil companies are known to proliferate strategic economic and moral discourses, less is known about their attempts to continue legitimizing their organizations in an age of energy transition. Taking BP’s Net Zero by 2050 initiative as a case study, this project engages Fisher’s narrative paradigm to identify how a quid pro quo sustainability functions in the organization’s communication. Narrative analysis of recent public-facing oil indust…
The Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself”: Predicting College Students’ Voting Behavior Using the Extended Parallel Process Model
This longitudinal study examines how well the EPPM predicts and explains college students’ voting behavior. One-hundred-and-seventy-eight undergraduate students filled out a survey at two points in time: (1) four weeks before and (2) one week after the 2022 midterm election. As hypothesized, the EPPM accurately predicted danger control outcomes (i.e., severity, susceptibility, self-efficacy, and response efficacy predicted voting intentions, and …
Embodied fragments: Embracing risk, failure, resistance, and pedagogical possibility
This video performance utilizes collage and assemblage to embody risk, failure, and possibility in the communication classroom as well as to explore how such embodiments function as disruptions to normative expectations. Informed by Amy Kilgard’s “pedagogy of chaos,” framework for “collage” the performers generate collaborative fragments of the classroom experience to speak with one another, with the audience, and as distinct, individual voices. …
The role of organizational and supervisor support in young adult workers’ resilience, efficacy and burnout during the Covid-19 pandemic
As workers continue to grapple with the ongoing changes and uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical to examine how to foster young adult workers’ resilience and efficacy, which may prevent their burnout in a sustained crisis. This study investigates the effects of the perceived qualities of change communication, organizational support, and supervisor support on young adult workers’ resilience and efficacy in South Korea, which may …
Becoming Mutant
Reimagining human-nature relationships in the climate change era conjures mutants, creatures from the deep that help surface modes of becoming for a drenched world of rising tides, plastic oceans, and soaked cities. Re-imaging deep, embodied relations with watery ecologies, then, also involves attention to speculative climate fictions (cli-fi) and the potential worlds they help fathom. Cli-fi renderings of climate disaster provide critical insigh…
