  • Ages and Mothers

    Yigal Bloch•ARTICLE•Liber Annuus•2025

Kingdom of Judah This article deals with the format of the introductory records for the reigns of the kings of Judah in the book of Kings, which are probably derived from Judah’s royal chronicles. The records concerning the kings of Judah are unique among the chronistic sources from the ancient Near East in recording for almost every king his mother’s name and his age at accession. The article suggests that these data were included in the royal c…

  • Chronological Notes on the Reigns of Hezekiah and Hoshea

    Yigal Bloch•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für die Alttestamentlic…•2025

The recent study by Nadav Naʾaman on the Judean »fiscal« bullae from private collections supports the reliability of the synchronism between the deaths of Ahaz and Tiglath-pileser III in Isa 14:28–29. Close attention to this synchronism and to the way it is anchored in Mesopotamian chronology dates the death of Ahaz and the enthronement of Hezekiah to 727/6 BCE (a year later than suggested by Naʾaman) and leads to important conclusions concerning…

  • The Eponyms of the Babylonian War of Tukultī-Ninurta I

    Yigal Bloch•ARTICLE•Altorientalische Forschungen•2023

Following the recent reconstruction of the order of eponyms in the Dūr-Katlimmu archive by Nahm, this study considers the eponyms of the period in which Tukultī-Ninurta I waged war for domination of Babylonia, from his 13 th regnal year onward. It is argued that recently published evidence supports the identification of the eponymy of Etel-pī-Aššur as the year in which Kaštiliaš IV of Babylonia was captured, and that the eponymy of Ellil-nādin-ap…

  • Was the Sabbath Observed in Āl-Yāḫūdu in the Early Decades of the Babylonian Exile

    Yigal Bloch•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für die Alttestamentlic…•2020

The present note relates to a study by Oded Tammuz on concluding transactions on a Sabbath in Elephantine, Āl-Yāḫūdu and Bīt-Našar. The note points out that ignoring the Egyptian dates of the Elephantine papyri impairs Tammuz’s discussion, and calls into question his distinction between the alleged Judean-majority population of Āl-Yāḫūdu and Judean-minority population of Bīt-Našar. Also, the Julian dates of some tablets were miscalculated by Tamm…

  • Ura = Ḫubullu XXII

Yigal Bloch, Wayne Horowitz•ARTICLE•Journal of Cuneiform Studies•2015•References: 1

The article provides a new edition of the twenty-second chapter or tablet of the Sumero-Akkadian bilingual topical word list Ura = ḫubullu, replacing the old reconstruction published in 1974 in MSL 11. New sources are added from recent publications while other sources from the old edition can now be removed because they belong to a secondary recension of this chapter. This new updated version of Ura XXII is part of the ongoing DCCLT project to pr…

  • Judeans in Sippar and Susa during the First Century of the Babylonian Exile

Yigal Bloch•ARTICLE•Journal of Ancient Near Eastern…•2014

The present study discusses the attestations of persons of Judean origin in Neo-Babylonian cuneiform tablets (of the period between 550 and 490 bce ) as possible evidence of some aspects of the social history of the community of Judeans exiled to Babylonia by Nebuchadnezzar II. Although the number of such attestations is very small, it is nonetheless possible to single out two groups which display different patterns of personal name giving across…
