This article discusses the experiences of Western European companies during China's opening to Western trade and investment in the late 1970s and 1980s. While much has been written about the Chinese policies that led to the introduction of capitalist measures in China, the experiences of European companies have not been covered in detail so far. Using records from several Swiss company archives as well as additional Chinese and Swiss archives and…

This article relies on reports written by Swiss diplomats during the Cultural Revolution in Beijing to discuss how they experienced the Cultural Revolution, and how the violence and chaos that they witnessed in 1966 and 1967 affected their mental health. Switzerland's importance as a hub for China in Western Europe meant that the Swiss diplomats were not harmed by the Red Guards. As a result, the Swiss diplomats gained a unique perspective among …

  • China's European Headquarters

    Open Access•Ariane Knüsel•BOOK•China's European Headquarters•2022

During the Cold War, the People's Republic of China used Switzerland as headquarters for its economic, political, intelligence, and cultural networks in Europe. Based on extensive research in Western and Chinese archives, China's European Headquarters charts not only how Switzerland came to play this role, but also how Chinese networks were built in practice, often beyond the public face of official proclamations and diplomatic interactions. By t…

    Ariane Knüsel•ARTICLE•Cold War History•2019•Cited by: 1

Using previously classified archival records, this article discusses how Chinese diplomatic staff operated a variety of intelligence networks from Switzerland during the Cold War. As the site of China’s first diplomatic mission in central Western Europe and the location of the United Nations’ European headquarters, Switzerland was uniquely suited as China’s intelligence hub in Europe in the 1950s and 1960s. Chinese officials established and ran a…

  • Framing China

By focusing on the political, economic, cultural and social context that led to the construction of the particular images of China in each country, the au…

    Ariane Knüsel•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Chinese History•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 10

This article analyzes the role that commercial interests played in Swiss perceptions of informal imperialism in China during the 1920s. Commercial interests were the driving force behind the establishment of Swiss relations with China in 1918 and Swiss rejections of Chinese demands to abolish extraterritoriality in the 1920s. Swiss commercial relations with China were deeply rooted in the social, economic, and political institutions and processes…

  • TOM Buchanan. East Wind

    Ariane Knüsel•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2013

Tom Buchanan's insightful and exhaustively researched study fills a gap in the historiography of British views on China. While the past years have seen an increasing number of publications about Anglo-Chinese relations, the British Left's relations with China have been mostly ignored. Buchanan analyzes three aspects of this relationship between 1925 and 1976: namely, the role the British Left played in organizations like the China Campaign Commit…
