Mechanisms for stimulating facility quality improvement
Tanzania launched the nationwide Star Rating Assessment in 2015 and has implemented it as a cornerstone of its national quality improvement program. We use variation in assessment results to explore mechanisms through which facilities improve quality. A mixed-methods positive deviance approach was applied by ranking all primary care facilities included in the Star Rating Assessment (n = 5,595) by their change in score between 2015/16 and 2017/18.…

Aflatoxicosis outbreak and its associated factors in Kiteto, Chemba and Kondoa Districts, Tanzania
Tanzania had experienced hundreds of cases of aflatoxicosis in the districts of Kiteto, Chemba, and Kondoa for the three consecutive years since 2016. Cases may end up with liver cancer. Aflatoxin-induced liver cancer had resulted in the demise of roughly three persons per 100,000 in the country during the same year, 2016. We investigated to characterize the latest outbreak of 2019 and identify its risk factors. This case-control study enrolled a…
High Seroprevalence of Sars-CoV-2 in Mwanza, Northwestern Tanzania
The transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, has been documented worldwide. However, the evidence of the extent to which transmission has occurred in different countries is still to be established. Understanding the magnitude and distribution of SARS-CoV-2 through seroprevalence studies is important in designing control and preventive strategies in communities. This study investigated the seropositivity of the SARS-CoV-2 virus…
A case analysis of a mass treatment approach to control GI and water-related conditions in Sudan
Key lessons learned from the whole experience were: persistence is paramount for the success of studies in precarious situations; lateral thinking generates alternative solutions that are novel, feasibility and practical in resources-limited settings; and finally respecting local culture and regulations is essential for building trust with both authorities and vulnerable societies
Maternal Opioids Usage and Cesarean Delivery Rates
Western Theory Meets Eastern Praxis
This article suggests a rereading of Arabic poetry through a critical lens that builds on T. S. Eliot's notion of continuity underpinning the nexus between traditional and the individual talent. Through analyzing the use of continuity in the pre/early-Islamic qaṣīda, as manifested in the conventional motif of nasīb (the amatory prelude), the article attempts to wed Western critical theory and premodern Arab poetic praxis. Drawing on the notion of…
