WeCanWork study
Our study highlights worker well-being differences approximately three months after initiating cancer treatment between men with and without physically demanding jobs. There are opportunities for employers to support worker well-being, specifically those with physically demanding jobs. Additionally, male cancer survivors with physically demanding jobs may need greater support outside of the workplace. Future research with a larger and longitudina…
Evaluation of a Total worker Health® leadership training in Latin America
Positive changes in leadership practices and notable health improvements were observed. No significant differences were found among countries. This study contributes to understanding TWH implementation in Latin America, emphasizing the importance of tailoring programs to address specific organizational and cultural needs
Application and comparison of point-of-care devices for field evaluation of underlying health status of Guatemalan sugarcane workers
With chronic disease prevalence on the rise globally, surveillance and monitoring are critical to improving health outcomes. Point-of-care (POC) testing can facilitate epidemiological research and enhance surveillance systems in limited resource settings, but previous research has identified bias between POC devices and laboratory testing. We compared the performance of two POC blood analyzers, the iSTAT handheld (Abbott, Princeton, NJ, USA) and …
Pragmatic Approach to the Assessment and Use of Digital Mental Health Interventions for Health Workers
Symptoms of poor mental health among working people, especially health workers, are on the rise in the United States, contributing to a burgeoning market of thousands of mental health technology products, few of which have undergone rigorous evaluation. Most research on these products focuses on deploying digital mental health interventions as ancillary support in clinical practice and community settings. Little is known of the effectiveness of t…
Latin American Agricultural Workers' Job Demands and Resources and the Association With Health Behaviors at Work and Overall Health
In the present study, we describe the job demands and job resources (JD-R) experienced by agricultural workers in three Latin American countries and their relationship to proactive health behaviors at work and overall health. Following previous research on the JD-R model, we hypothesized that job demands (H1) would be negatively related to agricultural workers' self-reported overall health. On the other hand, we hypothesized that job resources (H…
Leveraging an Implementation Science Framework to Measure the Impact of Efforts to Scale Out a Total Worker Health® Intervention to Employers
The role of dissemination and implementation (D&I) science is critical to the translation of Total Worker Health ® into practice and to the success of interventions in addressing current and future implications for worker safety, health, and well-being. D&I frameworks can guide researchers to design Total Worker Health ("TWH") delivery approaches that use flexible implementation strategies to implement the core components of programs for employer…

International Total Worker Health
Total Worker Health® (TWH) is a framework for integrating worker and workplace safety, health, and well-being, which has achieved success in European and US settings. However, the framework has not been implemented in Latin America or in agricultural sectors, leaving large and vulnerable populations underrepresented in the implementation and evaluation of these strategies to improve safety and promote health and well-being. This study presents a …
Total Worker Health® and Small Business Employee Perceptions of Health Climate, Safety Climate, and Well-Being during Covid-19
The COVID-19 pandemic created workplace challenges for employee safety and health, especially in small enterprises. We used linear mixed-effects regression to examine changes in health climate, safety climate, and worker well-being, prior to the pandemic and at two timepoints during it. We also examined whether employees at organizations that had received a TWH leadership development intervention prior to COVID-19 would better maintain pre-pandem…
Profiles of total worker health® in United States small businesses
Our study demonstrates that employee engagement in TWH will be highest when businesses have a strategy for how they implement a TWH approach and when they demonstrate leadership commitment to these strategies and foster positive safety and health climates. Our results offer suggestions on how to use TWH assessments to develop interventions for small businesses. More research is needed to understand whether small businesses can improve upon their …
A Pilot Study to Assess Inhalation Exposures among Sugarcane Workers in Guatemala
Sugarcane workers are exposed to high concentrations of particulate matter. Future studies should investigate the potential role of silica, heavy metals, and agrochemicals in the etiology of chronic kidney disease in this population
Wet Bulb Globe Temperature and Recorded Occupational Injury Rates among Sugarcane Harvesters in Southwest Guatemala
As global temperatures continue to rise it is imperative to understand the adverse effects this will pose to workers laboring outdoors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between increases in wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) and risk of occupational injury or dehydration among agricultural workers. We used data collected by an agribusiness in Southwest Guatemala over the course of four harvest seasons and Poisson gener…
Total Worker Health Leadership and Business Strategies Are Related to Safety and Health Climates in Small Business
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Total Worker Health ® (TWH) business strategies and employee perceptions of leadership commitment and safety and health climates. Using data from 53 small enterprises and 1271 of their workers collected as part of the Small + Safe + Well (SSWell) Study, we confirm the primacy of the relationship between leadership commitment to safety and workplace safety climate. After account…
Workplace Screening Identifies Clinically Significant and Potentially Reversible Kidney Injury in Heat-Exposed Sugarcane Workers
An epidemic of chronic kidney disease of unknown origin (CKDu) has emerged in the past two decades in agricultural communities, characterized by progressive renal failure with a dearth of early clinical symptoms. The aim of this study is to improve understanding of the natural history of this disease and to evaluate the impact of an educational and behavioral intervention on the trajectories of renal decline among a cohort of Guatemalan sugarcane…
Total Worker Health
Total Worker Health ® (TWH) frameworks call for attention to organizational leadership in the implementation and effectiveness of TWH approaches. It is especially important to study this within in the small business environment where employees face significant health, safety, and well-being concerns and employers face barriers to addressing these concerns. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of how small business leaders …
Prescription Opioid Epidemic
The author discusses efforts to education Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)-licensed prescribers of controlled substances on guidelines for managing pain and modifying opioid prescribing practices in an effort to end the epidemic of opioid abuse in the U.S., despite the tendency for DEA-licensed veterinarians to be overlooked
The Use of Health Impact Assessment for a Community Undergoing Natural Gas Development
The development of natural gas wells is rapidly increasing, yet little is known about associated exposures and potential public health consequences. We used health impact assessment (HIA) to provide decision-makers with information to promote public health at a time of rapid decision making for natural gas development. We have reported that natural gas development may expose local residents to air and water contamination, industrial noise and tra…
Human health risk assessment of air emissions from development of unconventional natural gas resources
Lifeguard lung
OBJECTIVES: Two sequential outbreaks of respiratory disease among lifeguards at an indoor swimming pool with water spray features were investigated. METHODS: Questionnaires were administered to recreation center employees following each outbreak. Respondents reporting 2 or more pool-related symptoms were offered clinical evaluation, including bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage and transbronchial biopsy. Pool air and water were sampled for f…
