Eyes in the room trump eyes on the screen
Scaffolding may be important for children to overcome puzzling aspects of video chat. We examined whether live co-viewer behavior (responsive or unresponsive), video chat partner’s eye gaze (aligned or misaligned), and object similarity (similar or dissimilar) impacted 24- to 30-month-old children’s responsiveness to (and short-term learning from) video chat. Co-viewer behavior was the primary factor influencing children’s responsiveness and lear…

Males and females show differential brain activation to taste when hungry and sated in gustatory and reward areas
Organic Public Geographies
A new field of “public geographies” is taking shape (Fuller 2008) in geography's mainstream journals. While much is “traditional”, with intellectuals disseminating academic research via non- academic outlets (Castree 2006; Mitchell 2008; Oslender 2007), less visible is the “organic” work and its “more involved intellectualizing, pursued through working with area-based or single-interest groups, in which the process itself may be the outcome” (War…
The Effects of Normal Aging on Source Memory for Odors
Source and item memory for olfactory stimuli were assessed in healthy older (65+) and young adults. During the study phase, a male and a female source presented 16 odors to each participant one at a time. Each source presented 8 odors to the participant. As a way to assess source memory, the participant was asked to indicate whether an odor from the study phase was presented by the male or female. As a way to assess item memory, a study phase odo…
Unawareness of Smell Loss in Normal Aging and Alzheimer's Disease
Awareness of loss in smell sensitivity was assessed in 80 normal elderly subjects, 80 patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD), and 80 patients with sinusitis by comparing measured smell sensitivity to questionnaire-based, self-reported sensitivity. Both AD patients and sinusitis patients had significantly poorer diagnosed smell sensitivity than the normal elderly. Both patient groups had thresholds which on average were about nine times m…
