Valency (mis)matches in Baltic languages
This study investigates valency patterns in Latvian and Lithuanian using parallel film subtitles. The data reveals about 2.5 valency matches for every mismatch, with most matches stemming from parallel monovalent and transitive constructions. Systematic mismatches are attributed to five principal factors: (i) differences in case inventories, (ii) idiosyncratic uses of shared cases, (iii) divergent transitive verb inventories, (iv) the role of par…
Efficient sentence processing significantly affects the position of objects in Russian
In this article we explore various properties of direct objects in Russian that may condition the preference for a preverbal versus postverbal position of the object, against the general trend towards VO constituent order in Russian. First, we show that a preference for OV over VO order is associated with (in order of increasing effect size) animacy and definiteness of the object, personal pronouns in object function and pronominal object clitics…
Areal effects on argument-coding patterns
This article introduces the special issue on valency-related phenomena, with a focus on the areal dimension in the cross-linguistic distribution of argument-coding patterns. A central concern is how areal effects shape these distributions and how they can be distinguished from genealogical effects. We review current approaches, data sources, and new quantitative methods for identifying areal signals, emphasizing the need to combine them with deta…
Object Marking in Western Eurasia
This paper investigates object marking strategies in Circum-Baltic languages and beyond, using a sample of 103 predicates from 30 Western Eurasian languages from the BivalTyp database. The study aims to identify areal clusters in object marking and evaluate the relevance of the Circum-Baltic linguistic area in this context. It finds that while most Circum-Baltic languages dissolve into larger, genealogy-driven clusters, areal signals are present,…
