Pedagogists and educators engaging ethical-political dimensions of early childhood education
This article explores how pedagogists (pedagogical leaders) and early childhood educators engage in ethical-political work within everyday practices in early childhood centers. We argue for modes of educator engagement that foster rich educational experiences while preserving the ethical-political dimensions of education. We draw on a project that focuses on educating educators to re-envision quality in Canadian early childhood education. The res…
Dis/orientating the Early Childhood Sensorium
This paper shares a multilayered retrospective story of an international exhibit curated for the Climate Action Childhood Network Colloquium as part of a commitment among exhibit curators to reveal the complexities of unpalatable climate futures. In the format of a tasting menu, we offer a sampling of the exhibit installations as a menu of potential alterpolitics in the making. Facing intensifying inequitable climate presents and futures, our int…
Speculative caring collaboratories
This paper explores how ‘caring collaboratories’ advance new possibilities for imagining and enlivening early childhood education and research. Thinking with María Puig de la Bellacasa’s (2017) feminist materialist theory of care the authors bring a retrospective analysis to their research experiences within three different climate change focused collaboratories. The paper begins with an overview of their research sites, anlaysis method for this …
Living Speculative Pedagogies as Boundary-Crossing Dialogues
This article shares the experience of expanding what was initiated at the SPARK conference as one example of engaging pedagogical development as an ongoing critically reflective boundary-crossing dialogue. It extends conversations in relation to a climate change inquiry project that explored thinking with trees by revisiting a concept integral to our inquiry—listening— in order to critically interrogate our pedagogical assumptions, actions, and a…
Unruly Voices
Drawing on data from a multi-jurisdictional, participatory research project with children and educators, this chapter resituates prevailing early childhood education frameworks for sustainability (ECEfS) within a common worlds orientation to argue in favor of curriculum and pedagogy as lively, contingent, more-than-human entanglements. It is an exploratory attempt to engage unruly voices—those voices not so readily ruled, disciplined or managed—a…
Gender and Care with Young Children
This book is an exploration of how children, educators, and things become implicated in gendered caring practices. Drawing on a collaborative research study with early childhood educators and young children, the author examines what an engagement with human-and non-human relationality does to complicate conversations about gender and care. By employing a feminist material analysis of early childhood education, this book rethinks dominant Euro-Wes…
