Exploring Diagnostic Classification Prevalence in German and Dutch Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: An International Cross-Sectional Comparative Study
Classification systems like the DSM-5 and ICD-10 facilitate international comparative research on mental disorders. However, few studies have compared classification distributions in child and adolescent psychiatric settings across countries. This study explored similarities and differences in classification prevalence between German and Dutch children and adolescents referred to psychiatric facilities. Data were retrospectively collected from cl…
Beyond symptoms: A multi-perspective study on youth with severe and enduring mental health problems
Youth, caregivers, and clinicians shared common ground in recognizing the pervasiveness of SEMHP. However, differences in perspectives on characteristics present challenges for diagnostics of these youth. Masking behavior of youth is unsurprising and indicates that these youth need a specific approach in diagnostics. A holistic and multi-perspective understanding of SEMHP is crucial for effective support, as care for these youth must take a syste…
Prevalence of Unhealthy Lifestyle Behaviours in Children and Adolescents with Mental Disorders
Unhealthy lifestyle behaviours, such as sleep problems, low physical activity, poor diet, and excessive screen time, are common among children and adolescents. Lifestyle has a significant impact on children's physical and mental health. This study examined the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyle habits in children and adolescents in psychiatric care, and how they vary by age, gender, and diagnosis. Parent-reported data on sleep, physical activity, …
Perspective-taking by teachers in coping with disruptive classroom behavior: A scoping review
Primary school teachers experience heavy workloads coping with pupils' disruptive classroom behavior. Teachers' interventions are mostly child-oriented, with often minimal influence on pupils' behavior. Teachers changing their views by perspective-taking may be more effective in handling disruptive classroom behavior. This scoping review explores the available scientific studies concerning primary school teachers' perspective-taking in coping wit…
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing in adolescents with autism; Efficacy on ASD symptoms and stress
In sum, these results of this uncontrolled study suggest a partial effect of EMDR in adolescents with ASD on ASD symptoms, rated by their caregivers. In addition, the results of this study show that EMDR treatment on daily experienced stress significantly reduce perceived stress as reported by the participants, and improves global clinical functioning. The results also suggest a 'sleeper effect', since no significant effects were found between ba…
Novel Insights into Somatic Comorbidities in Children and Adolescents Across Psychiatric Diagnoses: An Explorative Study
Many children with psychiatric disorders display somatic symptoms, although these are frequently overlooked. As somatic morbidity early in life negatively influences long-term outcomes, it is relevant to assess comorbidity. However, studies of simultaneous psychiatric and somatic assessment in children are lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of somatic comorbidities in a clinical sample of children and adolescents with psy…
Vitamin D status in children with a psychiatric diagnosis, autism spectrum disorders, or internalizing disorders
In this this cross-sectional, explorative study high rates of vitamin D3 deficiency in children with different psychiatric disorders were found. The results showed an inverse relation between BMI and vitamin D3 levels in the total group. Vitamin D3 deficiency was particularly common in boys with ASD and obesity. Lifestyle factors may contribute to the association between high BMI and low vitamin D3 levels in boys with ASD. Vitamin D3 deficiency i…
Mental and Social Health of Children and Adolescents With Pre-existing Mental or Somatic Problems During the Covid-19 Pandemic Lockdown
Background: The COVID-19 lockdown increases psychological problems in children and adolescents from the general population. Here we investigate the mental and social health during the COVID-19 lockdown in children and adolescents with pre-existing mental or somatic problems. Methods: We included participants (8-18 years) from a psychiatric ( N = 249) and pediatric ( N = 90) sample, and compared them to a general population sample ( N = 844). Meas…
Treatment Refractory Internalizing Behaviour Across Disorders: An Aetiological Model for Severe Emotion Dysregulation in Adolescence
Auto-aggressive behaviour, especially treatment refractory suicidality in adolescents with psychiatric disorders, may be challenging to clinicians. In search of therapeutic possibilities, we have integrated current opinions regarding causality and interdependency of suicidality and auto-aggressive behaviour across disorders within the HiTOP framework. We propose a developmental model regarding these unsettling behaviours in youths that may help t…
Social Attention and Emotional Responsiveness in Young Adults With Autism
Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are generally characterized by marked impairments in processing of social emotional information, but less is known about emotion processing in adults with the disorder. This study aimed to address this by collecting data on social attention (eye tracking), emotional arousal (skin conductance level, SCL), and emotional awareness (self-report) in a paradigm with social emotional video clips. Fifty-two yo…
