Pre-Civil War Universities’ Afterlife of Slavery
The call for many higher education institutions to atone for their histories of enslavement is rapidly growing. Prior reparations research, however, has primarily focused on reparations at the federal level. Utilizing QuantCrit with the afterlife of slavery and racialized organizations theory, a discrete-time hazard model, was developed to predict whether a higher education institution established prior to the Civil War engaged in university repa…
The Transformational STEM Consciousness Scale
Guided by QuantCrit, we introduce and validate the Transformational STEM Consciousness (TSC) scale, which fuses students' motivation to pursue racial and social justice through STEM with a critique of STEM's historic complicity in inequity. Surveying 255 undergraduate and graduate students in 18 justice‐integrated STEM courses across 11 US institutions, confirmatory factor analysis supported a unidimensional structure. Results also showed evidenc…
Latinx STEM Students’ Values toward Conducting Research for Social Change
This study uses a national longitudinal sample of 612 Latinx STEM bachelor’s degree recipients across 171 higher education institutions to examine the STEM undergraduate experiences and institutional contexts that predict their values toward conducting research that will have a meaningful impact on underserved communities. Results show that several background and precollege characteristics, particular STEM majors, learning about science and techn…
Black student views on higher education reparations at a university with an enslavement history
Research has yet to examine how Black undergraduates view various forms of university reparations for slavery. Using Critical Race Quantitative Inquiry and the Black Radical Imagination to ground the study, we explore Black undergraduates’ level of support for various forms of university reparations at a Southern university with an enslavement history. Findings from 92 Black students reveal wide support for various forms of university reparations…
Does a University’s Enslavement History Play a Role in Black Student–White Faculty Interactions? A Structural Equation Model
Drawing upon Hartman’s (1997) notion of the afterlife of slavery and Critical Race Quantitative Inquiry, this study examines whether Black college students’ emotional responses to their institution’s history of slavery plays a role in contemporary interactions with white faculty. Using structural equation modeling techniques on a sample of 92 Black students from a southern U.S. institution historically involved in slavery, findings highlight the …
Racially inclusive climates within degree programs and increasing student of color enrollment
Program and institutional predictors of environmental justice inclusion in U.S. post-secondary environmental and sustainability curricula
Environmental justice (EJ) issues and perspectives, which emphasize the disproportionate environmental hazards experienced by low-income communities and communities of color, are often excluded from higher education sustainability discourses and curriculum. Utilizing a national sample of 297 interdisciplinary environmental and sustainability (IES) degree programs, this study identifies program-level values and student racial/ethnic demographics, …
Making a Difference in Science Education
To increase the numbers of underrepresented racial minority students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), federal and private agencies have allocated significant funding to undergraduate research programs, which have been shown to increase students’ intentions of enrolling in graduate or professional school. Analyzing a longitudinal sample of 4,152 aspiring STEM majors who completed the 2004 Freshman Survey and 2008 Colleg…
