Stories by the campfire: Use of generative A.I. voice assistants to support older adult reminiscence self-efficacy
Impact of rewards on cognitive game performance: Competition with peers increases enjoyment in easy, but not difficult tasks
Weakness exploitation: Predicting socially communicative devices as a successor to internet-based graphical user interfaces
Existing theories of technology transitions cannot predict what new technological paradigm will supplant the currently leading, internet-enabled graphical user interface paradigm. This article introduces a preliminary approach (‘weakness exploitation’) to explain the rise and fall of four technology ‘empires’: print, television, the internet and socially interactive devices (such as robots, chatbots and internet of things devices). The approach i…
Modeling Closed Captioning Subjective Quality Assessment by Deaf and Hard of Hearing Viewers
Closed Captioning (CC) is a service primarily designed for deaf and hard of hearing (D/HoH) viewers. The CC translates spoken speech into text for television or film screen display. The quality assessment methods for live captioning are limited to quantitative measures, while the viewers are still dissatisfied with the current quality. One method to improve the current quality assessment procedure is to include D/HoH viewers in the evaluation pro…
The HCI living curriculum as a community of practice
HCI education reflects the continual evolution of HCI, embracing the changing landscapes of technology, infrastructure, and technology use. This forum aims to provide a platform for HCI educators, practitioners, researchers, and students to share their perspectives, reflections, and experiences related to HCI education. --- Sukeshini Grandhi, Editor
Pragmatics of Network Centrality
Communication of Emotion in Social Robots through Simple Head and Arm Movements
Automated Delineation of Subgroups in Web Video: A Medical Activism Case Study
Web 2.0 tools in general, and Web video in particular, provide new ways for activists to express their viewpoints to a broad audience. In this paper we deployed tools that have been used to find subgroups automatically in social networks and applied them to the problem of distinguishing between two sides of a controversial issue based on patterns of online interaction. We explored the problem of distinguishing between anti- and pro-vaccination ac…

Practical Problems Associated with the Use of Cluster Analysis
Comparative evaluation of a variety of clustering methods on real and simulated data indicates that the appropriate method for a given set of data must be determined empirically. Selection of an appropriate method generally requires several preliminary analyses. With larger data sets, preliminary analyses on the whole may not be possible. As an alternative one may adopt an interactive strategy and break a large set into manageable subsets
Exploratory Cluster Analysis of Attitude Structure in the New Zealand Electorate
In replicating a national survey dealing with political attitudes in the New Zealand population (2) the authors had to consider the problems associated with classifying their own newly obtained sample of 451 individuals in terms of the responses elicited by an interview which included 35 attitude items and nine biographical measures. The attitude items were designed to measure responses to the political situation and New Zealand society in genera…
