Democratic societies defeat (Covid-19) disasters by boosting shared knowledge
Preparing people for dealing with hazards, diseases and disasters requires teaching them statistics, and ideally doing so by means of good representation formats in a dynamic fashion. Translating these dynamics to simple communication is what governments need from scientists
Physics and decisions
In social science, we seek to understand human decisions in terms of social-psychological primitives: a decision maker or conscious self, aware of its opportunity sets, resource constraints, preferences, and somewhat contentiously, endowed with at least a spoonful of free will.Tired of swimming and reluctant to brave cold rapids, one decides to devise a bridge of logs.Without the self-conscious and the associated free will, this concept of decisi…
Herbert Simon, innovation, and heuristics
Herbert Simon viewed innovation as a particular type of problem-solving behavior that entails refocus of attention and search for alternatives outside the existing domain of standard operations. This exploration outside of standard routines involves heuristic-based discovery and action, such as satisficing search for information and options. In our observations on the innovation process, we focus on knowledge generation. We propose viewing the pr…
Toward a transactional theory of decision making
This paper poses a Deweyan challenge to both the neoclassical framework of rational choice and models of bounded rationality and deliberation, especially the procedural theory of rationality advanced by Herbert Simon. We demonstrate how modern theories on procedural or instrumental rationality trace their origin to the tradition of British empiricism, especially the philosophy of David Hume. Most theories of action such as Simon's assume actors m…
