Reconstructing Old Chinese *‐ts Using Han‐Time Material
Baxter & Sagart (2014b) reconstruct *‐Vt‐s on the basis of Middle Chinese reflexes in ‐jH (from some OC *‐s) coupled with either etymological or graphic connections to words in Middle Chinese ‐t . This approach, while perfectly sound, can suffer from lack of etymological or graphic data, leading to missed reconstructions. Since Old Chinese *‐ts syllables retained an *‐s in Late Han Chinese, long after OC *‐Vs and *‐ks had lost *‐s (Baxter 1992: 5…
The development of Sanskrit velars into Gāndhārī
As a language of religious and administrative importance in the early centuries of the common era, Gāndhārī came to be a donor into its neighbouring languages, such as Tocharian and Chinese. Consequently, advances in Gāndhārī historical phonology can help us discover new loanwords, refine our understanding of the historical phonology of its neighbouring languages, and eventually improve our understanding of the relationship between the communitie…
Automatic detection of phonological change in Chinese rhymed corpora
Large annotated corpora of Chinese rhymed poetry have recently become available, in part due to the development of automatic annotation techniques, such as Baley (2022) . The availability of such annotated corpora makes possible the computer-assisted analysis of rhyming practices from a diachronic point of view. This paper proposes to couple such annotated rhymed corpora with the China Biographical Database (CBDB) (2021) to assign individual poem…
Evaluating rhyme annotations for large corpora: Metrics and data
Recent methods have been proposed to produce automatic rhyme annotators for large rhymed corpora. These methods, such as Baley (2022b) greatly reduce the cost of annotating rhymed material, allowing historical linguists to focus on the analysis of the rhyme patterns. However, evidence for the quality of those annotations has been anecdotal, consisting of a handful of individual poem case studies. This paper proposes to address the issue: first, w…
Leveraging graph algorithms to speed up the annotation of large rhymed corpora
Rhyming patterns play a crucial role in the phonological reconstruction of earlier stages of Chinese. The past few years have seen the emergence of the use of graphs to model rhyming patterns, notably with List’s (2016) proposal to use graph community detection as a way to go beyond the limits of the link-and-bind method and test new hypotheses regarding phonological reconstruction. List’s approach requires the existence of a rhyme-annotated corp…
