When Fascism Is the Problem, How Can Feminism Be the Solution? A Conversation with Alex Charnley and Michael Richmond, Authors of Fascism and the Women’s Cause
Maria Elena Indelicato previously interviewed the authors of Fascism and the Women's Cause on the occasion of the publication of the book, Fractured: Race, Class, Gender, and the Hatred of Identity Politics (Indelicato, Charnley, and Richmond, 2022). In this interview, Indelicato invites Alex Charnley and Michael Richmond to highlight the contemporary political issues they felt compelled to address through the historical analysis presented in thi…
The New Racial Regime
Facing the Hydra Head of Populism
Naming, sustaining, nurturing
In the spring of 2024, we issued a call for a thematic number titled “Education, antiracism and decoloniality: tensions, resistances, and possibilities” as part of Educação, Sociedade & Culturas [Education, Society & Cultures], a multilingual journal of CIIE – Centre for Research and Intervention in Education of the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto, Portugal, as a result of an open call for special issues pr…

This conversation is conducted between Dr Maria Elena Indelicato (MEI), book review editor of Journal of Intercultural Studies, and the two co-editors of the book Queer Literature in the Sinosphere (Bloomsbury Academic, 2024). In the conversation, co-editors Dr Hongwei Bao (HB) and Dr Yahia Zhengtang Ma (YZM) introduce the historical, social and scholarly contexts of the book, lay out the book’s key topics, themes and theoretical concerns, elucid…
Understanding populist far-right anti-immigration and anti-gender stances beyond the paradigm of gender as ‘a symbolic glue’
Building on theoretical framings in critical race and queer studies, this article focuses on the first female prime minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, as an entry point to examining the current alignment between far-right populism, anti-gender movements, and White supremacist conspiracy theories in Europe. First, considering the contradictions that female leaders of far-right populist parties seem to negotiate, this article compares Meloni’s comm…
Neither Black Nor White
Settler colonies such as those in Australia during the nineteenth century were rife with myths. One myth in particular bears witness to a complex matrix of colonial relations, in which race and gender intersected in the definition of who could be counted as a “respectable” member of the settler population. “Neither black nor white,” the Chinese were invariably disliked by Aboriginal peoples. The present essay takes this myth of racial antagonism …
Beyond whiteness
Defined as ‘borderlands’ by Tracey Banivanua-Mar, the sugar towns of North Queensland in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were populated with a great variety of non-white ethnic minorities: Chinese, Indian, Japanese, ‘Malay’, Pacific Islander and later southern European. Instances of violence between these population groups have been recounted as if they were detached from the socio-historical conditions dictated by settler colon…
Legacies of empire
In this article, we delve into the characterisation of international students as “Confucian Heritage” learners. To appreciate the implications of such iterative interpellation, we develop a genealogy of Sinology, which is here approached as the discursive effect of a colonial epistemic division of the world into free and democratic West and civilised and yet authoritarian East. In mapping the deployment of such heuristic in the management of inte…
The legacy of Cold War anti-racism
In this article, we develop a genealogy of international education studies’ tenets of culture shock and skills deficit. To trace their emergence, we map the discursive shifts which underpinned cultural anthropology’s involvement in the administration of US colonial, domestic, and international affairs respectively in the early 1900s and 1950s. These shifts are concomitantly linked to the formation of the field of intercultural communication, of w…
Australia’s New Migrants
This book offers a comprehensive and critical analysis of the tropes employed in the categorization of international students living and studying in Australia. Establishing the position of migrant students as ’subjects of the border’, the author employs various models of emotion in an analysis of the ways in which public debates on migration and education in Australia have problematised international students as an object of national compassion o…
China loves Italy”
Since the term “transnational cinema” first appeared in 1997, most studies have focused on films epitomizing the logic of either profit maximization or ethnic affinity to explain phenomena such as the mainstreaming of Kung Fu movies. Yet, these two logics do not account for the entirety of the transnational projects that have been produced to date, hence the call for more studies on “trans-border patterns” that operate beyond both of them (Berry …
