Artykuł zawiera analizę kwestii nieczystości i brudu jako elementów obrazu miast polskich w świetle wybranych źródeł archiwalnych z lat 1950–1970. Przedmiotem badań były takie urządzenia komunalne jak: sieć wodociągowa i kanalizacyjna, oczyszczalnie ścieków, wysypiska śmieci, hotele, łaźnie miejskie i publiczne szalety. Postawą źródłową tych studiów były przede wszystkim dokumenty archiwalne wytworzone przez państwowe instytucje i urzędy kontroln…
Kultura i nauka w stosunkach polsko-włoskich (1945–1989)
The article contains a brief analysis of Polish-Italian cultural and scientific relations between 1945 and 1989. The authors based their findings not only on the literature on the subject, but above all on archival documents stored in both Polish and Italian central archives. This made it possible to indicate the dynamics of these relations, which depended primarily on changes in the international political situation during the various periods of…
Polish Environmental History 1945–56
The article focuses primarily on several problems in the broadly understood environmental history of Poland during the Stalinist period. First and foremost, it points to the category of man’s attempts to master the environment. This primarily involves plans to transform nature and implement an economic development model based on industrialisation, devised without accounting for its costs. At the opposite end of the scale came attempts to rule ove…
Sposób traktowania zwierząt, warunki produkcji i nadużycia w zakładach mięsnych w Polsce w latach pięćdziesiątych i sześćdziesiątych XX wieku
The article seeks to outline the images of cruelty towards animals for slaughter in Poland at the turn of the 1950s and the 1960s. The source materials constituting the basis for the research are primarily the scarce archival documents found at the Archives of Modern Records and the Archive of the Institute of National Remembrance. The author seeks to determine at which stage of the animals’ life the level of cruelty was the highest, how the abus…
W kierunku animal studies. Studia nad stosunkiem do zwierząt w XX w
Chodzi o studia nad zwierzętami, a ściślej nad stosunkiem ludzi do zwierząt w kontekście historycznym
The Enemy and the Victim
The article argues that two primary roles were prevalently identified for dogs in the period concerned: for one thing, dogs were perceived as objects of human malevolence or at least dislike; this had to do with the dissemination of disease – particularly, rabies, dangerous to humans. For another, the dog was represented as a victim of cruelty. The exchange of arguments between adherents of different solutions to the ‘canine question’ (dog-pounds…
Modernisation through Contamination
The period 1945–70 saw a change in the approach to environmental contamination on the part of Polish authorities and the society. Before 1956, the imposed model of economic modernisation, which imitated and reproduced the Soviet patterns, glaringly contradicted the requirements of ecology. In the aftermath of the political turn of 1956, protection of waters and air against pollution finally became a matter of debate involving the authorities and …
Post-1989 historiography’s distorted image of the relation between authorities and society in Poland during the period from 1944 to 1989

Old Age in Communist Poland
The article attempts at determining the most important factors shaping the social situation of aged people in Poland in the period 1945–89, seeking to describe, in vast amounts of detail, the demographic diversity (size of population concerned, gender categorisation, numerical amounts by age), residence (urban or rural region) as well as living conditions, health, and education status of the population concerned. Research has shown that the socia…
Citizens of Communist Poland as ‘Small Individualists’
The Polish historiography describing the history of Poland after 1945 has not too frequently or penetratingly raised the issue of adaptation of the Polish society to the conditions of a communist state. The scholars researching into this period mostly focus on political analyses and, in this context, deal with attitudes and behaviours expressing, in the fi rst place, resistance, if not political opposition, against the authorities. 1 Most of thos…
Dylematy aktywizmu społecznego na wsi polskiej w latach 1944-1956
The policy of communist authorities in Poland as seen through rumors in the years 1949-1953 The article deals with the image of the Polish Communist authorities during the period of deep Stalinism (1949-1953) in the light of common knowledge and rumors circulating among the ordinary people in Poland. The study is based mainly on information collected by the Polish political policy (bezpieczeństwo) and local committees of the Polish Communist Part…
