Naród u granic
This article is an introduction to issue 13 of the journal Studia Litteraria et Historica, devoted to nationalism and conceptions of nation developed in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe, as well as to their influence on the contemporary social, cultural and political life of the region, particularly on issues of migration and frontiers – both territorial and chronological. The introduction outlines connections between, on the one hand, the c…
How Do You Feel in Polish? On Men’s Emotions, the Refusal of Compassion and the Politics of Feelings of the National Democrats
What does it mean to feel Polish? If Polishness is to be not only an ethnic and cultural feature, but also a way of expressing and realising the Polish spirit, it inevitably entails a particular set of desired feelings, attitudes, and ways of reacting. In my article, I focus on the emotional profile of a Pole, as postulated by National Democracy, a radical nationalist movement, in its beginnings at the turn of the twentieth century in partitioned…
Exercises in expansion. Colonial threads in the National Democracy’s turn toward discipline
1895 was the first year of the “Brazilian fever” in Galicia, i.e. a migration wave of peasant masses from Galicia to Brazil. In my article, I analyze the content of the 1895 “transitional” volume of Przegląd Wszechpolski (“All-Polish Review”), previously called Przegląd Emigracyjny (Migration Review), when the Lviv journal passed into the hands of the National League. I shall discuss the ways in which folk masses were presented in particular arti…
Solidarność mimo różnic – solidarność dzięki różnicom. Działaczki Ogólnopolskiego Strajku Kobiet
W badaniu dotyczącym organizatorek Ogólnopolskiego Strajku Kobiet (OSK) – jednym z największych, jakie dotychczas zrealizowano w Polsce – przeprowadziłyśmy prawie 100 wywiadów CAWI i PAPI z lokalnymi koordynatorkami grup OSK z całego kraju.
Dorota Masłowska w poszukiwaniu „my” [From rejection to praise of irony. Dorota Masłowska in her search of “we”]
From rejection to praise of irony. Dorota Masłowska in her search of “we”The adventures of Dorota Masłowska, experienced between her novels Snow White and Russian Red and Honey, I Killed Our Cats, show a world where capitalism is the only way of organising reality. At the same time, it is a power affecting all types of relations: among people and between people and the world. The motif connecting Masłowska’s novels is the pursuit – through one’s …
Na czyichś Kresach. Pamięć, nostalgia i resentyment w Europie Środkowo–Wschodniej”
Zapis dyskusji wokół problemów związanych problematyczną historią kresów wschodnich i zachodnich, tożsamością narodową, pamęcią zbiorową, kwestiami nostalgii, resentymentu, retrybucji. Rozmowa wokół projektu "Majątek": wystawy i towarzyszącej jej publikacji
Od melancholii do rozpaczy. O prozie Andrzeja Stasiuka
From melancholy to despair. About Andrzej Stasiuk’s prose worksIn Moja Europa, Jadąc do Babadag and Fado Andrzej Stasiuk describes his travelling to the countries of the East-Central Europe: its diminished, forgotten part, lying on the margins of History and Progress. It is a land of melancholy, of the eternal emptiness and lack. To praise it means to give an ironic response to the enthusiasm of a “return to the West”, to the attempts to meet Eas…
Post-colonial Poland—On an Unavoidable Misuse
The post-colonial face of Poland is rather problematic. Nationalistic right-wingers started using interpretations applying the post-colonial theory, and the theory itself seems to put little resistance to this type of appropriation. Rather than acknowledging such state of affairs as the fate of every idea falling into the hands of the natives, in this paper I would like to treat the problems of Polish post-coloniality as a very interesting test, …
