  • Buildings, Lands, and Rents

    Open Access•Rosa Congost•ARTICLE•Religions•2024•References: 4

In Ancien Régime Spain, ecclesiastical wealth consisted of not only land, but also the rental income raised from tenancies of which the Church was proprietor. Therefore, the suppression of monasteries and convents in Spain cannot be studied only in terms of the transfer of their principal estates. The incoming Liberal State appropriated the Church's rents for its own use, although many had fallen into abeyance before the suppressions began. To as…

This article studies the changes in ownership of real estate, livestock and objects belonging to agricultural workers in the region of Girona, north-eastern Catalonia, through the analysis of a sample of nearly one thousand postmortem inventories dated between 1725 and 1807. It shows that a sizable number of agricultural workers gained greater access to property rights in land and other means of production, as well as undeniable improvements in t…

  • Seeing credit and property rights from below

The Catalan case in south-western Europe offers us the opportunity to take a detailed look at the impact a lowering of the interest rate may have had on the poor of a specific area. It is vital to examine how property rights operated in specific contexts, given the close relationship between land and credit markets. Our working hypothesis is that, in some instances where property rights were redefined, as happened in eighteenth-century Catalonia,…

    Open Access•Rosa Congost, Ricard Garcia‐orallo•ARTICLE•Historia Agraria Revista de…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The idea of “liberating or freeing up” land can be found in numerous studies of Spain’s economic evolution in the second half of the nineteenth century. Many of the measures implemented by the liberals were related to land, some of which have been considered key by Spanish historians. However, recent empirical studies have shown very dynamic land markets even during the Ancien Régime, raising the question of whether the changes should be attribut…

  • Beyond Life Cycle and Inheritance Strategies

Rosa Congost, Rosa Ros et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social History•2016•Cited by: 1

In this article we propose to study social change that took place in the eighteenth century, a period of demographic growth in which increasing difficulties of access to land could have led to greater downward mobility and proletarization. However, our hypothesis is that this was also a period of middle class emergence in some rural regions. In the studied case (the Girona region in north-eastern Catalonia), after significant growth of the number…

This article studies social dynamics in the Catalan region of Girona during the second half of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth centuries, using marriage contracts signed before a notary. The analysis of this source reveals the existence of important social and economic changes, especially among the lowest groups of rural society. Among these transformations, the increase in the real value of dowries – especially in the case of…

Open Access•Rosa Congost, Josep Portell et al.•ARTICLE•Population (English Edition•2012•References: 4

In certain regions of Spain, it was customary among the Catholic population to request a dispensation from banns. A study of this practice since the seventeenth century in Catalonia sheds new light on marriages in the region. This short paper focuses on the archives of the diocese of Girona, with a study of the content, characteristics and continuity of this data source and an assessment of its representativeness. It also examines the motives beh…
