Neoliberal White Corporate Saviourism in Public Education Outsourcing
Private and corporate interests continue to find new ways to penetrate public K-12 education in Canada, often through the outsourcing of services that are best provided by school-based professionals. In this article, we explore how neoliberal privatization intersects with the discourse of white corporate saviourism through philanthropic non-profit organizations that infiltrate schools under the guise of goodwill and benevolence. Using Project 11 …
Outsourcing Mental Health Programs
Students are experiencing high levels of stress and mental health distress and are at greater risk of suicide, resulting in calls to provide appropriate mental health supports in schools. In response, provincial governments are outsourcing K–12 mental health supports to private organizations (both non- and for-profit). Through a review of Manitoba education documents, we traced over 50 private organizations recommended by the provincial governmen…

Who is the “Student”? A Critical Analysis of Neoliberal Education Reform Legislation
Neo-liberal reforms in education have been sweeping the globe, undermining education as a public good, and diminishing its contributions to democratic life. Using post-structural perspectives, this article provides a critical discourse analysis of a proposed legislative bill in the province of Manitoba, Canada, as it relates to the construction of the “student.” Using Foucault’s conceptualizations of governmentality and historical ontology of the…
Stigmatized
Stigma devalues, discriminates, and magnifies social inequalities. For children in care, who have far worse educational outcomes than children who are not in care, stigma negatively effects the others’ perceptions, as well as the children’s perceptions of themselves. This paper is drawn from a larger research project which considered the ways in which school leaders supported children in care in their schools and the barriers they experienced in …
A Critique of a Child-Centered Curriculum
Imagine a world full of human beings existing to and for themselves alone, insensitive and removed from the social and natural world. Here we contemplate child-centeredness, a discourse used liberally in the realm of early childhood education and yet rarely considered critically. Drawing from Gert Biesta, we will explore the ways in which the notion of a child-centred curriculum positions the child as an egological being and thus minimizes the ch…
Educating Children in Our Care
In Canada, there is increasing recognition that poor educational outcomes of children and adolescents involved with the child welfare system represent an emerging crisis for youth, their families, and the broader society. Interprofessional education and collaboration between educators and social workers may facilitate better outcomes for children in care. Although interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaboration (IPC) are wel…

Motivations and Experiences of Teachers in a Northern Manitoba Community
This paper utilizes an exploratory case study method to examine the factors that attract and motivate teachers to stay in a remote, northern Canadian community. Bakan’s (1966) framework of agency and communion, provides a lens for exploring and understanding teachers’ experiences of working in the north where the term “the North” is understood not simply as one of two geographical poles, but also represents a consciousness of place. Subsequently,…
(Re)searching methods
The trouble with education research is that the research is burdened with trouble before it begins. Working as a poststructural education researcher and engaged in a recent research project that sought to engage with questions of teacher identity, I employed an alternative data elicitation method of literary response groups – similar to that of book clubs. This paper will illustrate a rationale for literary response groups, my experiences of usin…
