  • A Multi-Isotope Approach to Early Childhood Palaeolithic Diet and Provenance from a Magdalenian Individual from Northern Iberia

Open Access•Antonio Higuero Pliego, Antonio Higuero-Pliego et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2026

Multi-isotope analysis on various body tissues is increasingly used in archaeology and palaeontology to provide valuable information about an individual’s life-history at different temporal resolutions (isobiographies). This paper presents the dietary and mobility reconstruction and anthropological study of a recently identified Magdalenian child from Los Canes cave (Asturias, Spain), through conventional osteological analysis, sequential stable …

Three deciduous tooth crowns were found in Unit 18B in El Castillo Cave (Spain), considered a transitional Middle-Upper Paleolithic Unit with numerous14C dates with means earlier than > 42-44 ka cal. BP. Our goal was to describe these teeth, compare them to Neanderthal, Mousterian Modern Humans, and Early-Mid Upper Paleolithic fossils (through scatterplots andZ-scores), and analyze their morphology. The teeth consist of deciduous and isolated cro…

OBJECTIVES: This article documents an incomplete child's mandible found in H. Obermaier's excavation campaign (in 1912) in El Castillo Cave, Spain. This fossil was assigned to what was then considered a phase of the "Aurignacian-delta". MATERIALS AND METHODS: We exhaustively analyzed the original Obermaier documents, with particular attention to those corresponding to the year of the discovery. We extracted a bone sample to radiocarbon date the f…

At the site of Marillac, near the Ligonne River in Marillac‐le‐Franc (Charente, France), a remarkable stratigraphic sequence has yielded a wealth of archaeological information, palaeoenvironmental data, as well as faunal and human remains. Marillac must have been a sinkhole used by Neanderthal groups as a hunting camp during MIS 4 (TL date 57,600 ± 4,600BP), where Quina Mousterian lithics and fragmented bones of reindeer predominate.

  • Eight hundred‐year‐old human remains from the Ituri tropical forest, Democratic Republic of Congo: The rock shelter site of Matangai Turu Northwest

Little is known about human prehistory in the central African lowland tropical forest due to a paucity of archaeological evidence. Here we report results from our archaeological investigations of a late Holocene site in the northeast Congo Basin, with emphasis on a single skeleton from the rock shelter site of Matangai Turu Northwest, in the Ituri Forest, Democratic Republic of Congo. The skeleton dates from ∼810 BP (1235 calibrated AD) and is as…

The necropolis discovered in the Cloister of the El Burgo de Osma Cathedral (Soria, Northern Spain) consists of a group of 63 burials, with a total of 75 individuals, 55 adults, 4 youths and 16 children between 0 and 13 years old. Historical documents dating from the time when this necropolis was used (in the 17th and 18th centuries), point to this area as a cemetery for “...poor mendicants...”. The study of the pathologies of this human group co…

The site of Vaufrey Cave (Dordogne, France) has been excavated since 1968. This work revealed a complex stratigraphy ranging from the Acheulean to the Mousterian. Level I of this site, which was covered by stalagmitic floor A, contained a Quina type Mousterian lithic industry. Sediments indicate very cold and dry conditions with deer and reindeer remains among the fauna. In this level, which has a U/Th date of 74 ± 18Ka (Isotopic Stage 4), a huma…

The Boccard cave is located in the Créancey municipality of the Côte-d’Or. A clear stratigraphy has been defined with a Mousterian layer in which three human permanent teeth were discovered: a lateral upper left incisor, an upper second right premolar and a lower second right molar. The metrical and morphological, descriptive and comparative studies of these remains enable us to integrate them within the variability of Neanderthal teeth and to ex…

  • Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease and unifocal eosinophilic granuloma in a visigoth from the Duratón necropolis (Segovia, Spain)

Individual number 12, exhumed at the Duratón Visigoth necropolis (Segovia, Spain), was found in a supine position inside a simple fossa without adornments. He was a very robust adult (∼50/60 years) male presenting two pathologies, independently originated and both occurring in a particular anatomical area: the right hip. The first one has been diagnosed as Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease, and it affects the right femur and the coxal. The femoral head …

This paper presents the discovery and study of two new fossil human remains from the mousterian site of Combe-Grenal located in the commune of Domme in Dordogne. These two fragments are from ribs and they have been found in level 25 (Bordes’ excavation ; Quina type Mousterian). One of them is a fragment of an adult right first rib. The second is a fragment of an adolescent lower mid-thoracic rib (possibly the 8th or 9th). Although none of these f…

This article…
