  • Phenomenological Research

    Karin Dahlberg, H Dahlberg•CHAPTER•Approaches to Qualitative Research•2026

In this presentation of the what, why and how of phenomenological research, we describe phenomenological philosophy as the foundation for a phenomenological approach to human science research. From this, we extract both the theory and practice of phenomenological research.

  • The Meaning of Essences

    Open Access•Karin Dahlberg, H Dahlberg•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2026

As long as there has been phenomenological empirical research, the relationship to the philosophical foundation has been a matter of dispute. One such example we find in a recent publication, where Byrne accuses us of misreading Husserl and his idea of essences. We hold that our reading of Husserl is accurate. We agree that phenomenological research is not simply about practicing phenomenological philosophical concepts, and we also argue how impo…

  • Experiences of slow movement practices in upper secondary school physical education

    Open Access•Anna Rosén, H Dahlberg•ARTICLE•European Physical Education Review•2026

We live in a fast-paced society, but amidst this rush, we can observe opposing trends, the slow movements. However, we know little about how these slow trends might have influenced the school subject of physical education (PE). The purpose of the research was to fill that knowledge gap and, from teachers’ perspectives, investigate what it means to teach slow movement practices (SMPs) within PE. In the present study, SMPs primarily involve yoga; h…

  • Balancing at the Beginning of Words—Revisiting the Idea of Open Awareness in Qualitative Research

    Open Access•H Dahlberg•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2022

In this article, my aim is to explain the phenomenological approach of openness in research. The understanding of open questioning is concerned with Merleau-Ponty’s analysis of the intimacy of siding with the world, and this relationship puts distinctive demands on researchers to be aware of the phenomena in the study. I also use the Feldenkrais approach that offers a body awareness practice that examines the border between humans and the world. …

  • Phenomenology of Science and the Art of Radical Questioning

    Open Access•H Dahlberg, Karin Dahlberg•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2020•Cited by: 10•References: 10

For some time, critique has been raised against the application of phenomenological philosophy in empirical research. In this article, we listen to the critical voices with the aim to revisit the connection between phenomenology as philosophy and its empirical practice in research. We claim that it is the question of how philosophy has been, or can be, used in empirical research that is at stake. We thus suggest a fruitful way of benefiting from …

  • Open and Reflective Lifeworld Research

    Open Access•H Dahlberg, Karin Dahlberg•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2020•Cited by: 28•References: 10

With the mission in mind to articulate an approach that is scientifically competent to meet the appeals from health care, education, social work, and other disciplines, the theme of this article is to rethink the essential ideas of phenomenological and hermeneutical research approaches, by exploring their philosophical underpinnings and especially the essential ontological idea of inseparability. We examine the fissure between approaches that fav…

  • On the stillness of movement

  • On flesh and eros in Sartre's Being and Nothingness

  • To not make definite what is indefinite

    H Dahlberg, Karin Dahlberg•ARTICLE•The Humanistic Psychologist•2003

This paper explores the basics of human science, namely within the understanding of perception, which in fact is about how we as humans are in relationship to the world. There are several philosophical and psychological traditions trying to explain the nature of perception, the perceived, and the role of the perceiver. An idea that we argue against is that perception is about a changing subject perceiving a constant world, which means that there …
