    Catherine E Clark•ARTICLE•Representations•2024

This article looks past the showy dramas of French Maoism in order to bring into focus its widespread and at times banal photographic practices in the late 1960s and 70s. Tremendous energy was devoted to taking and circulating photos of China within France. These photographs, whose close connection to the real seems at odds with the goals and means of the Cultural Revolution, were nonetheless essential to its enthusiastic reception in the West

  • B rian L add . The Streets of Europe

    Open Access•Catherine E Clark•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2022

What are city streets for? Should they be ruled by cars or people? Those who ask these questions, newly relevant since urban automobile traffic plummeted in March 2020, often evoke the richness and humanity of preautomotive streets. Brian Ladd’s latest book directly confronts that nostalgia, which he, as an American in Europe, has often shared. His study of European streets looks past their idealized or theorized forms to offer a portrait of what…

  • When Paris Was "À L'heure Chinoise" or Georges Pompidou in China and Jean Yanne's (1974) Les Chinois À Paris

    Catherine E Clark•ARTICLE•French Politics Culture & Society•2019•Cited by: 1

This article looks at two seemingly disparate events: Georges Pompidou's 1973 presidential visit to the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the filming and release of Jean Yanne's blockbuster comedy Les Chinois à Paris (1974). Both produced flawed visions of Franco-Chinese relations. During Pompidou's visit, officials and the press attempted to demonstrate that France enjoyed warmer relations with the PRC than any other Western nation. Yanne's f…

  • The Commercial Street Photographer

    Open Access•Catherine E Clark•ARTICLE•Journal of Visual Culture•2017

This article examines the history of the commercial street photographer, or photofilmeur, in France from 1945 to 1955. Although itinerant photographers had long operated, they organized as a new profession after the Second World War in response to hostile reactions from other ‘sedentary’ photographers, conservative officials, lawmakers, and the police. Tracing the fight to regulate and even ban photofilmeurs in state and police archives, courtroo…

  • Capturing the Moment, Picturing History

    Catherine E Clark•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2016

In August 1944, as Allied troops approached the French capital, Parisians rose up and fought to liberate their city. Despite its secondary status in military terms, the Liberation of Paris became one of the founding myths of postwar France, sold in pictures at the cinema but above all in photographically illustrated books and pamphlets and at a photo exhibition at the Mus e ́ e Carnavalet, Paris’s history museum. The fact that the Liberation was …

    Catherine E Clark•ARTICLE•Contemporary French Civilization•2015

The Vidéothèque de Paris, a moving image archive of the French capital, opened in 1988 in the Forum des Halles, site of the city’s former central food markets. This article analyzes the institution’s placement in this new development, its adoption of new technologies, and its engagement with discussions of history and memory. It argues that the Vidéothèque’s formation and first years epitomized the play with historical time that defined Paris in …
