  • The Oxford Handbook of Friedrich Schleiermacher

Andrew Dole, Andrew C Dole et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Friedrich…•2023

Friedrich Schleiermacher is now regarded as among the most influential figures in the history of Christian thought for his contributions to theology, philosophy, and theories and methods in religious studies. The German-language critical edition of his work beginning in 1980, Schleiermacher Kritische Gesamtausgabe, and English translations of key portions of his corpus beginning in the late nineteenth century, have allowed scholars to investigate…

  • Friedrich Schleiermacher’s Christian Faith

    Shelli M Poe•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Reformed…•2020

This chapter discusses Friedrich Schleiermacher’s mature theology in his Christian Faith (1830/31), or Glaubenslehre. The chapter situates the work in its modern context, highlights its ecclesial and ecumenical function, and introduces its dogmatic genre and theological method. The chapter argues that Schleiermacher’s Glaubenslehre is beneficially interpreted within the Reformed tradition, and offers two hermeneutical keys that unlock its Reforme…

  • The Veiled God

    Open Access•Shelli M Poe•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2020

In The Veiled God, Ruth Jackson Ravenscroft has three main goals. First, she seeks to demonstrate that Schleiermacher’s ethical, political, and philosophical work is intertwined with his theology and is not theologically neutral. The author develops this aim in response to the widespread practice of treating Schleiermacher’s hermeneutics or philosophical ethics, for example, apart from his theology. Second, Ravenscroft seeks to reappraise Schleie…

  • Locating Prayerful Submission for Feminist Ecumenism

    Open Access•Shelli M Poe•ARTICLE•Feminist Theology•2018

    R. Marie Griffith and Sarah Coakley suggest that feminist ecumenism across the evangelical-liberal spectrum is valuable for feminist studies of religion and theologies. In this context, I trace the conversation that has arisen around the idea of adopting ‘submission’ vis-à-vis the Christian notion of kenosis, and turn it in a new direction. I argue that Coakley’s apophatically cruciform understanding of submission in contemplative prayer contrast…

  • Schleiermacher’s Transcendental Reasoning

    Open Access•Shelli M Poe•ARTICLE•Feminist Theology•2016

I suggest that it is beneficial for Christian feminist theologians to affirm divine personhood on the basis of the revelation of God in the person of Jesus Christ. Doing so allows feminist theologians to connect the doctrines of God and Christ within systematic theologies. Moreover, by affirming divine personhood in concert with an extension of Friedrich Schleiermacher’s transcendental reasoning about redemption, feminists could contribute to the…

  • Friedrich Schleiermacher’s theology as a resource for ecological economics

    Open Access•Shelli M Poe•ARTICLE•Theology Today•2016

In this article, the author argues that Friedrich Schleiermacher’s Christian Faith offers useful theological resources for ecofeminists and all those concerned with establishing ecological economics. His notion of the Naturzusammenhang, or the interconnected process of nature, is significant for imagining the proper place of the human economy within the planet’s economy. However, for his theology to be an unambiguous resource for ecological livin…
