The intergenerational transmission of gender
Objective This study provides the first systematic longitudinal analysis of the influence of paternal involvement in family life—across childhood and adolescence—on the gender‐role attitudes of children by the age of 14 or 15. Background Recent research suggests that, in post‐industrial societies, paternal involvement in family life is increasing. My Home is my Castle? The Role of Living Arrangements on Experiencing the Covid-19 Pandemic
During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany, social restrictions and social distancing policies forced large parts of social life to take place within the household. However, comparatively little is known about how private living situations shaped individuals experiences of this crisis. To investigate this issue, we analyze how experiences and concerns vary across living arrangements along two dimensions that may be associated wit…
The Gendered Effects of Divorce on Mothers’ and Fathers’ Time with Children and Children’s Developmental Activities
How divorce influences parents’ and children’s time use has received very little scientific attention. This study uses high-quality longitudinal time-diary data across six waves from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children to examine how parental separation shapes parent–child time and children’s daily activities. Results show that separation leads to a strong increase of gender inequalities in parents’ time use. After separation, mother–ch…
Social class, parenting, and child development
Cause for concerns
COVID-19 is having a tremendous impact on gender relations, as care needs have been magnified due to schools and day-care closures. Using topic modeling on over 1,100 open reports from a survey fielded during the first four weeks of the lockdown in Germany, we shed light on how personal experiences of the lockdown differ between women and men. Our results show that, in general, people were most concerned about social contacts and childcare. Howev…

ObjectiveThis study provides the first systematic account of how father-child time (in total and across activity types) relates to children's cognitive development as well as examining whether paternal education moderates these associations.BackgroundFathers in Western countries allocate progressively more time to child care. However, most research on how parental time inputs affect child development focuses on maternal time. It remains unclear h…
Changes in Fathers' and Mothers' Time with Children
Parental time spent with children is a critical determinant for a child's cognitive, educational, and socio-emotional development. Using two waves of the Spanish Time Use Surveys, this study aims to investigate how mothers and fathers reorganized the time invested in physical and developmental childcare between 2002 and 2010. Results show that, during the period analyzed (marked by the start of the Great Recession in 2007), there had been: (i) a …
