In Search of the Promontorium Somnii
In 1863-1866, the French writer Victor Hugo wrote a long text in which he related a visit he made in 1834 at Paris Observatory, where François Arago showed him the Sun rising on the Moon. Amongst the lunar features progressively illuminated by the Sun, he noticed Promontorium Somnii and, impressed by this poetic name, he used it as the title of his text. We show that Promontorium Somnii , which has since disappeared from lunar terminology, was in…
Two Photograph Albums From the German Transit of Venus Expedition to the Auckland Islands in 1874
The State Library of Victoria in Melbourne preserves two albums of photographs taken by Hermann & Johannes Krone and Guido Wolfram, who were the photographers attached to the German expedition that travelled to the subantarctic Auckland Islands to observe the transit of Venus in December 1874. Coupled with published descriptions of the expedition, principally by Hermann Krone, it is possible to interpret the 89 photographs taken on the islands. T…
Full-text search capability
Burgeoning numbers of books and periodicals from earlier centuries are becoming available in online databases such as the British Library Online Newspaper Archive, the Making of America collection, the Million Book Project, the Gallica Project, Google Book Search and the Royal Society's Digital Journal Archive. For those databases that offer it, full-text search capability provides the historian with a novel tool for researching the origin and de…

Foucault, His Pendulum and the Rotation of the Earth
Léon Foucault (1819–68) is best remembered for his 1851 pendulum demonstration of the Earth's rotation, but he made many notable contributions to nineteenth century science, including the gyroscope, measurements of the speed of light and development of the astronomical telescope in essentially its modern form. Foucault pendulums swing in science museums around the world: one of novel design has recently been installed in The Science Museum in Lon…
The “Grammar” of Schooling
Why have the established institutional forms of schooling been so stable and why did most challenges fade or become marginalized? We approach these questions by probing a few case studies of reform, some that lasted to become part of the grammar of schooling and some that did not. We begin by exploring the origins of two enduring institutional forms, the graded school and the Carnegie unit. Next we analyze the history of three transient attacks o…
