The State Library of Victoria in Melbourne preserves two albums of photographs taken by Hermann & Johannes Krone and Guido Wolfram, who were the photographers attached to the German expedition that travelled to the subantarctic Auckland Islands to observe the transit of Venus in December 1874. Coupled with published descriptions of the expedition, principally by Hermann Krone, it is possible to interpret the 89 photographs taken on the islands. The albums show the expedition’s camp at Terror Cove and its construction as well as views of the Islands’ flora and geology, and remnants of castaways. One album also contains 15 tourist photographs of Melbourne and Egypt. The photographs are almost all available on-line
