Phonological short-term memory and individual differences in learning to speak
The language development of two bilingual siblings, who learned to speak at greatly different rates, is briefly described. The child with the delayed onset of speech had difficulty with articulation, syntax, function words and inflections, particularly when speaking in German. Now, as a young teenager, he has no overt speech problem in English, his preferred language, and he does well in school and on standardized achievement tests of language ar…
The process of training in processes
This paper presents a three-dimensional model for guiding the process of training community psychologists. The model, which emerged from a yearlong practicum, delineates four activities to be mastered, three levels of intimacy with these activities, and three levels of support provided to trainees. The model is presented first in abstract terms and then in terms of the experiential description of practicum activities. The paper concludes with a c…

Forward and Backward Associations in Learning Letter Sounds
20 preschool children were instructed in letter-sound correspondences in one of two ways. One group was presented with the letter symbol and asked to produce the sound, while the other group was presented with the letter sound and asked to point to the corresponding letter symbol in an array of letters. After the last acquisition trial, the children were given a reversal trial in which they were presented with the usual response and asked to prod…
The Relationship of Sibling Caretaking and Attentiveness to a Peer Tutor
Ethnographic measures of sibling caretaking were correlated with attentiveness to a peer tutor. Boys from families who assigned childcare tasks to male siblings were more likely to be attentive in a dyadic peer-tutoring session. General classroom attentiveness was also highly correlated with attentiveness to a peer tutor and to male sibcare. Girl tutee attentiveness and female sibcare were not correlated. Families who assign major childcare tasks…
The Effects of Elaboration and Rehearsal on Long-Term Retention of Shape Names by Kindergarteners
Two promising instructional paradigms are elaboration and overt rehearsal. In a study with both theoretical and curriculum-development implications, these two instructional paradigms were compared for facilitation of kindergarteners’ retention of shape names. Elaboration refers to the association of two unconnected stimuli (a shape name and a common object) in a meaningful context (a familiar story). Induced overt rehearsal involves repetition of…
