  • Racial and gendered impacts of international students on domestic peers

Open Access•Francisca Antman, Evelyn Skoy et al.•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2026

  • Synthesizing proteins on the graphics card

    Open Access•Fabian Offert, Paul Kim et al.•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2026

This paper investigates the application of the transformer architecture in protein folding, as exemplified by DeepMind’s AlphaFold project, and its implications for the understanding of so-called large language models. The prevailing discourse often assumes a ready-made analogy between proteins—encoded as sequences of amino acids—and natural language, which we term the language paradigm of computational (structural) biology. Instead of assuming t…

  • Kant and the Moral Need to Limit Theoretical Reason

Paul Kim, Paul J Kim•ARTICLE•Toronto Journal of Theology•2024

Why does Kant reject atheism in such strong terms despite his denial of the traditional proofs for the existence of God? I take the position that the question of atheism and the problem it entails are not a side issue but the recurring portrait of a figure that haunts Kant not just in the Religion, but throughout his critical philosophy. I seek to expand what Kant criticizes in atheism or, more accurately, to identify atheism as part of a collect…

  • A collaborative approach to improving representation in viral genomic surveillance

Open Access•Paul Kim, Paul Y Kim et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

The lack of routine viral genomic surveillance delayed the initial detection of SARS-CoV-2, allowing the virus to spread unfettered at the outset of the U.S. epidemic. Over subsequent months, poor surveillance enabled variants to emerge unnoticed. Against this backdrop, long-standing social and racial inequities have contributed to a greater burden of cases and deaths among minority groups. To begin to address these problems, we developed a new v…

Koh Eun Narm, Jenny Wen et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2023•References: 28

BACKGROUND: Childhood chronic illness imposes financial burdens that may affect the entire family. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to assess whether adults living with children with 2 childhood chronic illnesses-asthma and diabetes-are more likely to forego their own medical care, and experience financial strain, relative to those living with children without these illnesses. RESEARCH DESIGN: 2009-2018 National Health Interview Survey. SUBJECTS: Adult-chi…

  • The legacy of gender-based violence and HIV/Aids in the postgenocide era

Garnett Russell, Susan Garnett Russell et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2015

Drawing on qualitative interviews with 22 Rwandan women, we describe the lived experiences of women survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) more than a decade and a half after the 1994 Genocide. We argue that the intersection between GBV and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has long-term implications: the majority of women interviewed continue to endure trauma, stigma, social isolation, and economic h…

There has been a steady growth of the K-12 student population taking courses online. This study examined reasons for students to choose a public online charter school program and their perceptions of online discussion. A survey was sent to 1,500 students newly enrolled in a statewide public online charter school program. From those who responded, 44% indicated that the online discussion component is not helpful in achieving their academic goals. …
