Empire Films and the Crisis of Colonialism, 1946–1959
"Using popular cinema from the United States, Britain, and France, Empire films and the crisis of colonialism, 1946-1959, examines postwar Western attitudes toward colonialism and race relations. Historians have written much about the high politics of decolonization but little about what ordinary citizens thought about losing their empires. Popular cinema provided the main source of images of the colonies, and, according to Jon Cowans, films depi…
On Condition of Contrition
As the French have assessed American military actions over the past three decades, they have done so within a framework of memories about the Vietnam War. This article considers French memories of that war by examining reactions to American films on Vietnam released in France from 1978 to 1987, from Coming Home and The Deer Hunter to Rambo II and Platoon. Drawing upon reviews from 30 French newspapers and magazines as well as box-office figures a…
Black and White on the Silver Screen
This article explores French attitudes about race during and after the years of the National Front's breakthrough by looking at French films and film reviews on the topic of interracial couples. In a country in which antiracists have been reluctant to legitimize the concept of race by talking about it, but in which the far Right has made gains by proclaiming its own views on race, French film-makers in the 1980s and after broached the topic in nu…
A Deepening Disbelief
Three important films reveal changing American attitudes toward the Cold War in Southeast Asia in the years of growing U.S. involvement there: Joseph Mankiewicz's The Quiet American (1958), George Englund's The Ugly American (1963), and John Wayne's The Green Berets (1968). All three feature idealistic American heroes fighting communism in Vietnam – and, in the later two films, fighting American ignorance and apathy as well. Using some two dozen …
Fear and Loathing in Paris
In 1978, some 40 years after the practice of opinion polling first arrived in France, the country’s newspapers and magazines informed their readers that 76% of the French approved of Charles de Gaulle’s role in World War II, that 77% did not consider the pope’s moral instructions binding, that 83% never participated in winter sports, and that 36% thought Michel Rocard would be a good finance minister. Anyone who could not remember those findings …

Habermas and French History
Political Culture and Cultural Politics
Complaining in May 1946 that the French airwaves were polluted with 'this vile froth from the cafe-concert, these endless songs sung by floozies and hoodlums', the writer Jean Schlumberger asked, 'Why must our entertainment broadcasts be of such a humiliating vulgarity? To radio critic Jean Thevenot, however, French radio in 1946 suffered from 'numerous artistic broadcasts based on a snobisme of the obscure, the exclusive, the pretentious', and h…
French Public Opinion and the Founding of the Fourth Republic
As French plotted their path to recovery in aftermath of World War II, choice of country's political system was among most crucial ones facing nation. Any doubts that people would support Charles de Gaulle's appeal for a wholly new constitution were erased in October 1945, when 96 percent of electorate voted in a referendum to replace rather than reform a political system widely considered to have contributed to France's decline in 1930s and defe…
