  • A quantitative approach for sex estimation based on cranial morphology

    Open Access•E Nikita, Efrossyni Michopoulou•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 31

OBJECTIVES: This paper proposes a method for the quantification of the shape of sexually dimorphic cranial traits, namely the glabella, mastoid process and external occipital protuberance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The proposed method was developed using 165 crania from the documented Athens Collection and tested on 20 Cretan crania. It is based on digital photographs of the lateral view of the cranium, drawing of the profile of three sexually dimor…

  • A Test of the Effectiveness of the Coimbra Method in Capturing Activity-induced Entheseal Changes

    Open Access•Efrossyni Michopoulou, E Nikita et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017•Cited by: 21•References: 43

The current paper tests the effectiveness of entheseal changes in expressing activity patterns when the former have been recorded using the new Coimbra method. Changes on the subscapularis and biceps brachii were recorded using the Coimbra method on 78 men from the documented Athens Collection. Generalised linear models were adopted with entheseal changes as dependent variable and cross-sectional geometric properties, age and body mass as predict…

  • Evaluating the efficiency of different recording protocols for entheseal changes in regards to expressing activity patterns using archival data and cross‐sectional geometric properties

    Open Access•Efrossyni Michopoulou, E Nikita et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2015•Cited by: 23•References: 68

OBJECTIVES: In the past decade there have been extensive discussions on the potential utility of entheseal changes (EC) as activity markers. Nevertheless, no study to date has compared different EC recording protocols with respect to their correlation to activity patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article records changes on fibrocartilaginous entheses of the upper limbs of 90 male skeletons from the documented Athens Collection using the Hawke…
