A Better Shade of Black: Effects of Manufacturing Parameters on the Development of Ancient Black Bronzes
Copper alloys with controlled contents of Sn, Ag and Au were treated with methods and solutions that mimic those used in ancient and traditional procedures for the production of black bronze. Examination of the resulting patinas with colorimetry, SEM–EDS, TEM, Raman spectroscopy and XRD revealed no systematic differences according to the fabrication method, whereas patina homogeneity and colour in those alloys that did not contain precious metal …
Evidence of Stress Fracture in a Homo antecessor Metatarsal from Gran Dolina Site (Atapuerca, Spain)
We present the palaeopathological analysis of a right fourth metatarsal (ATD6-124) recovered from the Atapuerca-Gran Dolina site (Spain). This fossil, ca. 1 Ma, belongs to Homo antecessor, the earliest known European hominin species. The metatarsal exhibits a proliferative lesion on its medial periosteal surface. Periosteal reaction can be the bone response to a wide number of injurious processes. We describe a lesion on the basis of macroscopic …
Post‐medieval Crucible Production and Distribution: A Study of Materials and Materialities
This paper is concerned with the manufacture and trade of post‐medieval crucibles (14th–19th centuries). The analytical study of crucibles from different contexts in Europe and America employed optical microscopy and SEM–EDS, coupled with archaeological and historical data. We identified two major producers of crucibles, both of them in Central Europe, whose products appear widely distributed internationally. The analytical data allow an explanat…
Enamel hypoplasias and physiological stress in the Sima de los Huesos Middle Pleistocene hominins
This study presents an analysis of linear enamel hypoplasias (LEH) and plane‐form defects (PFD) in the hominine dental sample from the Sima de los Huesos (SH) Middle Pleistocene site in Atapuerca (Spain). The SH sample comprises 475 teeth, 467 permanent and 8 deciduous, belonging to a minimum of 28 individuals. The method for recording PFD and LEH is discussed, as well as the definition of LEH. The prevalence of LEH and PFD in SH permanent dentit…
The Atapuerca sites and their contribution to the knowledge of human evolution in Europe
Over the last two decades, the Pleistocene sites of the Sierra de Atapuerca (Spain) have provided two extraordinary assemblages of hominin fossils that have helped refine the evolutionary story of the genus Homo in Europe. The TD6 level of the Gran Dolina site has yielded about one hundred remains belonging to a minimum of six individuals of the species Homo antecessor . These fossils, dated to the end of the Lower Pleistocene (800 kyr), provide …
