  • The Relationships between Park Quality, Park Usage, and Levels of Physical Activity in Low-Income, African American Neighborhoods

Open Access•Megan Knapp, Jeanette Gustat et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Parks can be an important, low-cost neighborhood resource to increase physical activity and reduce overweight and obesity. The quality of parks, however, may impact use. This study used observational data to examine the relationships between park quality, park usage and levels of physical activity among users in 31 parks within low-income, African American neighborhoods. Relationships between park use and park characteristics (signs of disorder, …

  • Lunch Salad Bars in New Orleans’ Middle and High Schools: Student Intake of Fruit and Vegetables

Open Access•Carolyn Johnson, Leann Myers et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

The school lunch salad bar (SB) is a recommended food environmental strategy to increase access to, and consumption of fruit and vegetables (F/V). In a study to examine use of school lunch SBs, middle and high school students provided data via the Automated Self-Administered 24-h dietary recall (24HDR) tool for kids (ASA24-Kids-2012), a web-based data collection platform. Kilocalories were computed, food groups were assigned and F/V sources were …

  • Maternal Factors as Moderators or Mediators of PTSD Symptoms in Very Young Children: A Two-Year Prospective Study

    Open Access•Michael S Scheeringa, Leann Myers et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Violence•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 3

  • Higher body mass index may induce asthma among adolescents with pre-asthmatic symptoms: A prospective cohort study

    Open Access•Wen‐Chao Ho, Wen-Chao Ho et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Increased BMI exaggerates the risk of acquiring asthma in symptomatic adolescent females but not in adolescent males. Thus, gender is an important modifier of BMI-related asthma risk. Additional research will be required to determine whether the increased asthma risk results from genetic, physiological or behavioural differences

  • A School-Based Environmental Intervention to Reduce Smoking among High School Students: The Acadiana Coalition of Teens against Tobacco (ACTT)

Open Access•Carolyn Johnson, Leann Myers et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009

A school-based environmental program to reduce adolescent smoking was conducted in 20 schools (10 intervention; 10 control) in south central Louisiana. The 9th grade cohort (n = 4,763; mean age = 15.4 yrs; 51% female; 61% Caucasian; 30-day smoking prevalence at baseline = 25%) was followed over four years for 30-day smoking prevalence with the school as the unit of analysis. Although prevalence decreased in intervention schools and increased in c…

  • Postthaw survival of rhesus macaque sperm: Variation in the response of individual males to different freezing protocols

Open Access•Christine Gagliardi, Leann Myers et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2008

This study was designed to assess the effects of various cryopreservation protocols on the postthaw survival of rhesus macaque sperm. Multiple ejaculates of five mature males were collected and frozen by each of four different methods. Cryopreservation significantly reduced motility in all samples, regardless of the method, and the response of different ejaculates of the same male to each method proved to be consistent. The freezing method was a …

  • Leptin, adiposity, and testosterone in captive male macaques

    Open Access•Michael P Muehlenbein, B C Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 35

Leptin is considered to act as a signal relating somatic energetic status to the reproductive system. However, the nature of that signal and its relationship with male reproductive function across nonhuman primate species are unclear. We suggest that species-specific differences in leptin physiology may be related to the degree of environmental variation and variation in the importance of energy stores for male reproduction. In order to test the …

  • Hepatitis B and C Infections among Homeless Adolescents

Bettina M Beech, Leann Myers et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2002

The lifestyle of homeless adolescents places them at high risk for contracting serious illnesses. This study sought to determine the hepatitis status and predictors of hepatitis infection among 150 homeless adolescents. Each participant took a psychosocial survey and provided a venous blood sample. Most respondents (95%) had engaged in sexual intercourse; approximately 36% indicated they had exchanged sex for food, shelter, or drugs. Youth report…

  • Alcohol consumption among adolescents and young adults: The Bogalusa Heart Study, 1981 to 1991

    Carolyn Johnson, C C Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1995•References: 8

This report describes the alcohol consumption of adolescents and young adults who participated in the Bogalusa Heart Study, 1981 to 1991. Data were collected in three cross-sectional surveys of school-age children (11 to 19 years) and three surveys of young adults (18 to 32 years). White males had the highest proportion of drinkers and Black females had the lowest. By the end of the decade, adult White and Black male drinkers were about equal. Mo…
