  • Community Development Practitioner Profiling for Occupational Professionalisation, Skills Development and Continuous Quality Assurance

Open Access•Cornel Hart, Frik De Beer et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work/Maatskaplike Werk•2022

Raising practice standards through standardised, cohesive and effective movements drives professionalism, guided by a practice policy framework that describes its practitioners’ ethical code, standardised and quality-assured knowledge and skills to be measured against regulated occupational norms and standards. This article provides a broad overview of the requirements for occupational professionalisation linked to a countrywide practitioner prof…

  • Land restitution and income generation in protected areas in Mpumalanga, South Africa

Mirjam De Koning, Frik De Beer et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2014•References: 4

In many cases protected areas in South Africa have been established with little or no regard for communities living in or adjacent to them. The new challenge to protection of biodiversity is to find an equitable balance between conservation, beneficiation of the new land owners, and “balancing the books”. This article discusses the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve as a case study to illustrate some of the potential outcomes that co-management of…

  • Neutron Tomographic Assessment of Incisions on Prehistoric Stone Slabs

Open Access•L Jacobson, Frikkie De Beer et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 26

This study presents the application of neutron tomography to the analysis of ironstone slabs found in a late Earlier Stone Age context (Fauresmith industry) at the back of Wonderwerk Cave, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. These slabs have markings on the surface that might be anthropogenic, and thus significant to understanding the emergence of human symbolic behaviour. Neutron tomography proved to be an effective tool for distinguishing sur…

  • On applying cognitive psychology

    Open Access•Alan Baddeley, F C DE BEER•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 50

Recent attempts to assess the practical impact of scientific research prompted my own reflections on over 40 years worth of combining basic and applied cognitive psychology. Examples are drawn principally from the study of memory disorders, but also include applications to the assessment of attention, reading, and intelligence. The most striking conclusion concerns the many years it typically takes to go from an initial study, to the final practi…

  • Issues in community conservation

    Frik De Beer, F C DE BEER•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2010•References: 1

Over-exploitation of medicinal plants for traditional healing practices endangers pristine conservation areas. In South Africa, the Mpumalanga Parks Board (MPB) attempted through a medicinal-plants project to promote nature conservation and benefit traditional healers. The project was well planned and implemented, infrastructure was created, and a model farm was established to propagate medicinal plants. Yet, although the project was aimed at com…
