The role of socioeconomic status in U.S. children’s co-viewing television and family member relationship quality over time
Previous research on family television co-viewing has tended not to examine variation by socioeconomic status (SES). This research uses time diaries from socioeconomically and racially diverse child and adolescent respondents (ages 8–17) from the Child Development Supplement of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) in 2002 (N = 1918), 2007 (N = 1288), 2014 (N = 743), and 2019 (N = 622). I investigate socioeconomic differences in children’s to…

“Normal” childhood in the lives of financially struggling white daughters and mothers
Objective This study identifies the ways low‐income white daughters negotiate normative childhood when describing their responsibilities while growing up. Background Though family scholars have long theorized the power of family norms, we know little about the ways children navigate those norms. Using insights from scholarship about social class, whiteness, and childhood, this study explores the ways whiteness, classed experiences, and family lif…
Individual adjustments for many and structural change for some
Research on adolescent responsibilities outside of school rarely considers how schools and teachers mitigate the adverse consequences of those responsibilities on academic outcomes. We seek to understand when, and for whom, teachers and administrators accommodate students' out‐of‐school commitments. Analysing 61 interviews with teachers and staff at five high schools that serve predominantly low‐income students and survey responses from teachers …
Parent-Child Relationships from Adolescence to Adulthood
Background: Parent-child relationships are increasingly central in family life due to the delayed transition to adulthood. Methods: Using data from Add Health and the Add Health Parent Study from 1994-2018, we examine changes in parent-child relationships reported by the child and the parent across gender, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES) from ages 12-43 years old. We examine three broad categories of intergenerational solidarity: …
Media habits and their impact on media platform selection for information use
Media selection processes for current information are part of recipients' daily routine. As media choices take place repeatedly, they are most likely (at least partly) habitdriven. This paper focuses on two aspects: First, based on an elaborate definition of media habits as mental scripts automatically activated, we argue that habits are important determinants of the frequency of media platform selection for information purposes. Second, we diffe…

Cost effectiveness of a prize draw on response to a postal questionnaire
Study sample Power calculations were used to determine the sample size. A 1300-patient sample would demonstrate a 10% absolute difference (0.01 significance, 90% power), and have an evens chance of identifying a 5% difference at the 0.05 significance level. A total of 1,307 patients were eligible for inclusion in the study. A total of 654 patients were randomly included in the intervention group, and 653 were randomly allocated to the control gro…
