  • Fecal Steroids as Tracers of Human Population and Waste Management Practices at the Ancient Maya City of Ucanal, Guatemala

    Open Access•Jean D Tremblay, Peter M J Douglas et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•References: 44

Geochemical data compiled from dried sediments from three water reservoirs at the ancient Maya city of Ucanal, Petén, Guatemala, reveal low to undetectable fecal biomarker concentrations. These low concentrations may be the result of the aerobic decay of sterols combined with well‐managed waste disposal practices. Despite generally low concentrations of fecal biomarkers, evidence was detected for increased fecal residues during the Late Classic a…

  • Permafrost degradation and soil erosion as drivers of greenhouse gas emissions from tundra ponds

Open Access•Vilmantas Préskienis, Daniel Fortier et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Climate change poses a serious threat to permafrost integrity, with expected warmer winters and increased precipitation, both raising permafrost temperatures and active layer thickness. Under ice-rich conditions, this can lead to increased thermokarst activity and a consequential transfer of soil organic matter to tundra ponds. Although these ponds are known as hotspots for CO 2 and CH 4 emissions, the dominant carbon sources for the production o…

  • The influence of tropical Atlantic sea-surface temperatures and the North Atlantic Subtropical High during the Maya Droughts

    Open Access•Derek K Gibson, Jonathan Obrist‐Farner et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•References: 12

The frequency and duration of Late-Holocene hydrologic extremes in northern Guatemala were investigated using multiple sedimentological and geochemical proxies preserved in a sediment core collected from Lake Petén Itzá. A general trend of increasing aridity in the Maya Lowlands during the past 2000 years was punctuated by several multidecadal- to centennial-scale drought events recorded in the Petén Itzá sediments. In particular, the period span…
