  • From Compliance to Stewardship

Open Access•Robert, Stephen A Robert et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of University Teaching…•2026

Universities internationally are entering a new phase in their response to gender-based violence, shaped by shifting regulatory expectations and the growing influence of digitally-mediated misogyny among students. This commentary suggests the rise of the ‘manosphere’ (loosely connected online networks promoting misogynistic ideas) has reconfigured the conditions under which gendered harm emerges on campus, creating a mismatch between institutiona…

  • The limits of ‘backlash’ masculinity

Open Access•Robert, Stephen A Robert et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2026

This paper proposes a reconsideration of backlash as the dominant frame for analysing resistance to gender equality. Widely used to describe reactionary responses to feminist progress, the term often under-theorizes the strategic, organized and structural dimensions of contemporary masculinist mobilization. Building on feminist accounts of patriarchal adaptation, we foreground masculinity as a coordinated and politically organized project, well b…

  • The reanimation of normative manhood acts in schools

Robert, Steven Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•2026•References: 7

Drawing on qualitative survey data from 107 Australian teachers, we analyse how boys perform masculinity in schools through dominance, derision, defiance, and harassment, in ways that constitute reanimated normative manhood acts (Schwalbe, 2014). Teachers describe a noticeable shift around 2022, coinciding with the rising visibility and popularity of the manosphere, when some boys’ misogyny became more explicit, emboldened, and unchecked. Buildin…

  • Looking After Yourself Is Self-Respect”

    Open Access•Tristan Duncan, Robert et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2022•References: 55

Notions of masculinity have played a central role in social and cultural research on men’s drinking events. Within this context, masculinity is regularly called on to explain the problematic disparities that mark men’s alcohol consumption, including men’s disproportionate involvement in drinking and a range of alcohol-related harms. More recently, however, researchers have begun to emphasize men’s drinking events as sites of care and support, lea…

  • The ‘social worlds’ concept

    Open Access•Sandra J Maclean, Robyn Dwyer et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2020

Intervening in heavy drinking cultures within groups below the level of the population has been under-utilized as a means of reducing alcohol-associated harms. We argue that the concept of ‘social worlds’ is useful for the identification and investigation of heavy drinking cultures in collectivities at this level. The concept may also support investigations into other practices with health implications, such as other substance use or gambling. So…

  • Masculinity

Open Access•Robert, Steven Roberts et al.•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2020•References: 3

For sociologists, masculinity is not bound up with or innate to male‐sexed bodies. It is a social construct – an ideal image of manhood that is culturally specific and historically variable, but is generally situated in relation to, and characterized by, an absence of femininity. Central to sociological discussions of masculinity is the theorization of men's power, and how this is asserted, enacted against, or obtained at the expense of women, ot…

  • Reifying difference

Open Access•E Foeken, Robert et al.•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2019

This article contributes to the study of contemporary lesbian communities by examining the management of internal diversity on a lesbian ‘subreddit’ (i.e. a sub-section of the popular social news media website Reddit) in relation to the parallel conceptual categories of ‘post-gay’ and ‘post-lesbian’. Drawing on data obtained via virtual ethnography of this subreddit, it argues that contemporary lesbian communities have diverged significantly from…

  • Young Working-Class Men in Transition

    Robert, Steven Roberts•BOOK•Young Working-Class Men in…•2018

Young Working Class Men in Transition uses a unique blend of concepts from the sociologies of youth and masculinity combined with Bourdieusian social theory to investigate British young working-class men’s transition to adulthood. Indeed, utilising data from biographical interviews as well as an ethnographic observation of social media activity, this volume provides novel insights by following young men across a seven-year time period. Against th…

  • Continuity, change and complexity in the performance of masculinity among elite young footballers in England

    Open Access•Robert, Steven Robert et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2017•Cited by: 20•References: 52

Following recent research evidencing that young men are redefining the essential components of what it is to be a man, this paper draws on qualitative interviews with 22 elite-level, English Premier League academy level football (soccer) players to investigate their performances and understandings of masculinity in relation to decreasing homohysteria. Even in this gender-segregated, near-total institution, these working-class, non-educationally a…

    Open Access•Ann Berrington, Robert et al.•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2016•Cited by: 17•References: 38

Large socio‐economic differences in educational attainment and participation in Higher Education (HE) are seen in the United Kingdom (UK). Furthermore, improvements in attainment and in rates of progression to university have been much faster for most ethnic minority groups than for White children. Political rhetoric explains these differences in terms of a lack of aspiration, particularly among White, working‐class boys. This paper extends recen…

  • I just got on with it’

Robert, Steven Roberts•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2012•Cited by: 9•References: 23

In the 1980s, researchers established the need to document and analyse the educational attitudes, behaviours and outcomes of ‘ordinary kids' as a means of developing a holistic account of school experience. Yet, while significant attention is given to extremes in educational attitudes and behaviours, ‘ordinariness' tends to remain overlooked in contemporary research and policy discourses. This article contributes to this void by presenting data f…

  • A Case for Dissidence in Occupied Paris

    Steven Roberts, S B Roberts•ARTICLE•French History•2010

In Occupied Paris in June 1942, non-Jewish Parisians protested against the ordinance requiring Jews to wear the yellow star. Based largely on police archives, this article examines a subgroup within the protest made up of non-Jewish youth known as the Zazous. The Zazous were known for their attraction to jazz swing culture, music and dress, which both the Germans and Vichy considered delinquent and unpatriotic. Previous work on this period has te…
