  • Right-leaning egalitarians are just as susceptible to social justice-induced product patronage! Evidence from the US and Malaysia

Open Access•Rachel Mei Ming Wong, Chuma Kevin Owuamalam et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2023

We investigated the impact of egalitarianism on consumers' inclination to support fair-trade products and examined whether this effect was observed among individuals with different political affiliations. In four experiments featuring a fictional chocolate brand presented in either a social-justice (fair trade) or quality-focused (control) manner, we examined the product purchase intentions of both left- and right-leaning consumers in the United …

  • Sex Differences in Voyeuristic and Exhibitionistic Interests: Exploring the Mediating Roles of Sociosexuality and Sexual Compulsivity from an Evolutionary Perspective

    Open Access•Andrew G Thomas, Bridie Stone et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 49

Sociosexuality and sexual compulsivity predict sex differences in voyeuristic interest in the population. In this study, we used a sample of 1113 participants from the UK (46% men) to consider whether sociosexuality and sexual compulsivity interacted to explain these sex differences and whether this relationship extended to the related domain of exhibitionism. In doing so, we tested novel predictions derived from an evolutionary perspective which…

  • Sexual History and Present Attractiveness: People Want a Mate With a Bit of a Past, But Not Too Much

    Steve Stewart‐william, Steve Stewart-Williams et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 3

The aim of this study was to explore how people's sexual history affects their attractiveness. Using an Internet survey, 188 participants rated their willingness to engage in a relationship with a hypothetical individual with a specified number of past sexual partners, ranging from 0 to 60+. The effect of past partner number was very large. Average willingness ratings initially rose as past partner number rose, but then fell dramatically. For sho…

  • Placebo Psychotherapies and Nonconscious Learning in the Placebo Effect: Reply to Kirsch (2004)

    Steve Stewart‐william, Steve Stewart-Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2004

The main goal of our original article (Stewart-Williams & Podd, 2004) was to resolve the debate between the two major approaches to the placebo effect: expectancy theory and classical conditioning. In his commentary on this article, Kirsch (2004) discussed the relationship between these approaches. His position is largely consistent with our own, and therefore we have little to say in response to this aspect of the commentary. Our only comment co…

  • The Placebo Effect: Dissolving the Expectancy Versus Conditioning Debate

    Steve Stewart‐william, Steve Stewart-William et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2004•Cited by: 14•References: 91

The authors review the literature on the 2 main models of the placebo effect: expectancy theory and classical conditioning. A path is suggested to dissolving the theoretical impasse that has long plagued this issue. The key is to make a clear distinction between 2 questions: What factors shape placebo effects? and What learning mediates the placebo effect? The reviewed literature suggests that classical conditioning procedures are one shaping fac…
