  • Peer victimization and peer sexual harassment across early adolescence

Open Access•Kristina Holmqvist Gattario, Andrea Valik et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2025•References: 7

Researchers have debated whether peer victimization and peer sexual harassment (PSH) are branches from the same tree and/or whether they are different constructs; yet no previous study has been able to clarify this issue. We used exploratory structural equation modeling to examine three different, theoretically informed ways of conceptualizing peer victimization and PSH. Annual three-wave questionnaire data included 997 participants at T1 (M age …

  • Sexual revictimization by peers in school and organized activity contexts among adolescents

Darun Jaf, Kristina Holmqvist Gattario et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2025

Based on sexual revictimization theory, this study investigates the role of individual characteristics (e.g., depression and subjective well-being) and contextual factors (school and organized activities) in the development of sexual harassment revictimization among Swedish Grade 7 (46% girls; M age = 14.09) adolescents who were followed over 3 consecutive years. The analytic sample comprises adolescents in the school context (T1 N = 678, T2 N = …

  • The Role of Body Image Factors in Swedish Adolescents’ Sexting Behaviors

Open Access•Jonas Burén, Kristina Holmqvist Gattario et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 73

The current study tested a model in which three body image factors were assumed to be associated with adolescents’ sexting (sending nude or semi-nude pictures and/or video clips) to either romantic partners or strangers. We hypothesized that lower appearance esteem, more body surveillance, and more dysfunctional appearance beliefs would be associated with a higher likelihood of sexting. We also examined the effects of pubertal timing in the model…

  • Peer sexual harassment among 10‐year‐olds

Open Access•Andrea Valik, Carolina Lunde et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2024•References: 12

This is the first study examining peer sexual harassment among 10-year-olds (N = 985), studying how being a victim, perpetrator, or witness relates to emotional problems, and how these associations are moderated by gender and class occurrence of sexual harassment. Results showed that 45% of the participants reported victimization, 17% perpetration, and 60% witnessing sexual harassment, with vast overlaps between roles. Victimization and witnessin…

  • Peer sexual harassment, appearance esteem, and emotional problems

Open Access•Kristina Holmqvist Gattario, Emily Gabriela Vira et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2024•References: 14

This study used a longitudinal sample of early adolescent boys and girls (ages 10-12; N = 1113) to test a theoretically and empirically informed model suggesting that exposure to peer sexual harassment (age 10) predicts more emotional problems (age 12), and that lower appearance esteem (age 11) mediates this relation. On the within-person level, which is the level on which the processes theoretically should play out, we found no support for the p…

  • What have we learned about sexual harassment among young people? Concluding reflections

Open Access•Kristina Holmqvist Gattario, Carolina Lunde•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2023•References: 21

This article contains concluding reflections for a special issue on sexual harassment among young people. In this concluding article, we reflect on the 14 individual papers in the special issue through three cross‐cutting themes, each with important implications for policy and practice. The themes highlight that (1) attitudes and norms related to sexual harassment are core to its occurrence among young people, (2) the sexual harassment experience…

  • Special issue introduction

Open Access•Therése Skoog, Carolina Lunde et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 31

Sexual harassment is a serious and widespread social issue affecting numerous young people across the globe. Sexual harassment is prevalent in many everyday situations and contexts, not least in school. In recent years, public discussions emerging from the seminal #MeToomovement, have put the adversities of sexual harassment in the academic spotlight. This special issue presents cutting‐edge research on sexual harassment among young people from i…

  • Psh‐c

Open Access•Andrea Valik, Kristina Holmqvist Gattario et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 67

Peer sexual harassment among adolescents is a widespread problem worldwide, associated with several adverse outcomes. Although retrospective reports indicate that people's first experience of peer sexual harassment occurs before puberty, research in younger ages is still scarce and measures of peer sexual harassment developed for children are lacking. This study explores the possibility of measuring peer sexual harassment in late childhood by eva…

  • What Do Peers Think About Sexting? Adolescents’ Views of the Norms Guiding Sexting Behavior

Open Access•Jonas Burén, Kristina Holmqvist Gattario et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2021•Cited by: 13•References: 6

This study examined the content of injunctive peer norms (i.e., perceived peer approval) of sexting among Swedish adolescents. Written answers from 808 adolescents ( M age = 14.22) to an open-ended question about peers’ views of sexting were analyzed qualitatively using content analysis. Eight categories were distinguished for when and why sexting is acceptable or not in the peer group. A substantial share of adolescents believed their peers appr…

  • Study protocol for PRISE

Open Access•Therése Skoog, Kristina Holmqvist Gattario et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2019

The PRISE study will enable the researchers to answer fundamental, unresolved questions about the development of sexual harassment and thus advance the very limited understanding of sexual harassment during the transition from childhood to adolescence - a central period for physical, sexual, and social development. Due to the sensitive nature of the main research concepts, and the age of the participants, the ethical aspects of the research need …

  • How is men’s conformity to masculine norms related to their body image? Masculinity and muscularity across Western countries

Kristina Holmqvist Gattario, Ann Frisén et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Men & Masculinity•2015•Cited by: 13•References: 11

Previous research has suggested that men's conformity to masculine norms (CMN) is an important correlate of men's drive for muscularity. The present study aimed to further delineate the relationship between masculinity and men's body image by examining various dimensions of CMN in relation to various dimensions of men's body image (muscularity, leanness, and fitness) in a cross-national sample. Participants comprised young men from the United Sta…
