  • Generative AI in Undergraduate Education: An Early View of Developments, Prospects, and Challenges of the AI Revolution

Terence Day, Matteo Gonzalez et al.•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2025

Across all disciplines, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) threatens student academic integrity in traditional assessments. Its detection is unreliable. From talking with students, however, we know they are finding GenAI to be helpful in their studies. Through experiments and experience at five universities and colleges in the United States and Canada, this article demonstrates that GenAI can be strategically, thoughtfully, and critically…

  • Visualising an undergraduate geography field class using generative AI: Intent, expectations and surprises about the racial depiction of students

    Open Access•Terence Day, James Esson•ARTICLE•Area•2025•References: 14

This commentary reflects on an attempt to use ChatGPT to generate an image for a geography textbook. We explore why the image that was produced provoked surprise and intrigue and think through how our reactions revealed ingrained assumptions about educational spaces. Our discussion highlights the importance of intentionality in prompt design and offers a reminder of how seemingly neutral prompts can reproduce dominant narratives. We conclude by p…

  • Beyond Covid Chaos: What Postsecondary Educators Learned from the Online Pivot

Open Access•Terence Day, Calvin King Lam Chung et al.•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2023

The online pivot has opened many people’s eyes to new possibilities and challenges in the postpandemic world. This article describes what five geographers in three different countries learned from the experiment and assesses how the lessons can be carried forward. One of the big surprises for some of us was the extent to which students were open to different ways of learning during the 2020–2021 academic year. It is clear that some students wish …

  • A Preliminary Investigation of Fake Peer-Reviewed Citations and References Generated by ChatGPT

    Terence Day•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2023

An analysis of academic citations and references generated by the ChatGPT artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot reveals the citations and references are in fact, fake. They are clearly generated by a predictive process rather than known facts. This suggests that early optimism regarding this technology for assisting in research could be misplaced, and that student misuse of the chatbot can be detected by the identification of fake citations and re…

  • The Immediate Impact of Covid-19 on Postsecondary Teaching and Learning

Open Access•Terence Day, I-Chun Catherine Chang et al.•ARTICLE•The Professional Geographer•2021

Universities and colleges worldwide have quickly moved campus-based classes to virtual spaces due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This article explores the impact of this sudden transition of learning and teaching based on experiences and evidence from six institutions across three countries. Our findings suggest that although online and remote learning was a satisfactory experience for some students, various inequities were involved. Many students lac…

  • Geography Education: Fieldwork and Contemporary Pedagogy

    Open Access•Terence Day, Rachel Spronken-Smith et al.•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2018

Geographers have taken a leading role in post‐secondary pedagogic innovation, and this is reflected in a rapidly evolving landscape of teaching and learning within the discipline. Lectures used to involve the transmission of information from the lecturer to the student but are now much more interactive, with multimedia, student discussions, interactive exercises, and formative assessment based on “clickers.” Practical and laboratory work is now m…

  • Core themes in textbook definitions of physical geography

    Open Access•Terence Day•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 27

Key Messages Contemporary physical geography has core themes that define the subject as it is taught at the undergraduate level in North America and the United Kingdom. Physical geography textbooks have responded well to the emerging theme of anthropogenic processes. These textbooks, however, struggle to represent coherent perspectives on space, the uniqueness of places, and the apparent contradiction of physical geography as a science
