The Geographical Variation in Wages Paid by Particular Industries
High and low wages
Wages, gender and industrial structure in New Zealand
A variant of shift‐share analysis is applied to manufacturing wages data for 22 districts in New Zealand for 1980 and 1984, to test, via three models, the explanatory power of components representing the gender split and industrial structure of the workforce separately and in combination. These first three components provide a surprisingly low level of explanation in many districts, and, overall, their national performance has declined over time.…
British Ports and Their Export Hinterlands
The unhappy experience of the port of Bristol in establishing a new deep-water port raises wider issues concerning the geographical nature of the export-generating hinterland of exporting ports in advanced countries. A variety of considerations suggest that these will not be as geographically constrained as in the past, and from these a model of hinterland change is suggested from which, in turn, three testable hypotheses of changes to ports-hint…

Why They Go Where They Go
Politicians can use their influence over the allocation of scarce resources for political as well as socio-economic ends. They also present interpretations of these allocation patterns to the electorate as 'public images'. In Northern Ireland the geography of government-sponsored manufacturing firms bears a superficial resemblance to the social and political geography of the province, and this paper examines the very different interpretations pla…
Industrial linkages and the dual economy
Hoare A. G. (1978) Industrial linkages and the dual economy: the case of Northern Ireland, Reg. Studies 12, 167–180. Despite a large number of recent research papers, the study of industrial linkages is still deficient in two respects: in recognising the heterogeneity of linkage (especially input linkage) flows, and in examining the perceptual dimension of linkages, which, in turn, can take a number of forms. A sample of engineering and metal-wor…
Foreign firms and air transport
Hoare A. (1975) Foreign firms and air transport: the geographical effect of Heathrow Airport. Reg. Studies. 9, 349–367. This paper hypothesizes that the geography of foreign investment in the U.K. is partly related to the desire of overseas companies to be accessible to international airports. This is tested at two geographical scales: that of the U.K. as a whole and that of South-East England where foreign investment is proportionately most sign…
