  • Introducing Rita

Open Access•Alex Baumber, Peter Ampt et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2026

This paper introduces Rapid Intensive Transdisciplinary Analysis (RITA), a research approach that combines key characteristics of transdisciplinary research (TDR) with decades of experience applying Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) to farming systems and rural communities. While many of the principles of transdisciplinary research are commonly found in applications of PRA, such as the involvement of diverse societal actors and the identificati…

  • Soil-based carbon farming

Open Access•Alex Baumber, Rebecca Cross et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Rural Studies•2024•References: 2

Soil-based carbon farming has been identified in previous research as a win-win for farm productivity and the mitigation of climate change through carbon sequestration. However, it faces numerous barriers to adoption, including low carbon prices, high transaction costs, information barriers and high uncertainty around future outcomes, markets and policy conditions. Collaboration between landholders and other stakeholders has been proposed as a po…

  • Adaptation constraints and prospects for future research priorities in lowland rice-based farming systems

Open Access•Van Touch, Rebecca Cross et al.•ARTICLE•Environment Development and…•2023

Sustainable agricultural development not only addresses global food insecurity but may also alleviate poverty by enriching the lives of millions of smallholder farmers. Improving the sustainability and profitability of agriculture where smallholders are dominant creates profound impacts because small landholding farmers produce approximately 70–80% of the global food. The need for a thorough understanding of the factors affecting farmers’ adoptio…

  • Exploring Agroecological Sustainability

    Rebecca Cross, Peter Ampt•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 13

In this article we describe a movement to regenerate and sustainably use native grasslands using innovative grazing and cropping strategies. We find that this movement has the essential characteristics of a “community of practice” (COP) and is a strong example of a bottom-up transition toward a sustainable agroecological farming system. This COP was identified and described using participatory rural appraisals followed by biophysical and sociocul…

  • HLA antigens in four Pacific populations with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

    Open Access•S W Serjeantson, D P Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1982

HLA antigen distributions in persons with normal and abnormal glucose tolerance were compared in four Pacific populations. The populations included Melanesians from the Fijian Islands, Loyalty Islands and mainland New Caledonia and Polynesians from the Wallis Islands. HLA-DR results are provided for the first time for Pacific groups. In Polynesians, HLA-B22 was increased in frequency in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and al…
