Geographic Information Systems (GIS) engages with a variety of important policy issues through linking social science data with spatial analysis and by demonstrating the importance of applied GIS in both the public and private sector. GIS, though commonly used in the realms of city planning and natural resource analysis, have a far broader range of applications ranging from analysis of ancient community interactions to modern social media data

  • Estimation of Long-Term Trends in the Tropospheric 14 CO 2 Activity Concentration

    Open Access•I Světlík, P P Povinec et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 24

Fossil CO 2 emissions have been diluting the global 14 C/C ratio of atmospheric CO 2 (Suess effect). We estimated the 14 CO 2 amount in the atmosphere (and its trend) utilizing the calculated 14 CO 2 activity concentration in the atmosphere ( a acn , reported in mBq m –3 ). This parameter, calculated from Δ 14 CO 2 and the CO 2 mixing ratio (reported in micromoles of CO 2 per mole of air), is connected with the 14 CO 2 quantity in the volume or m…

  • Educational Level and Risk Profile of Cardiac Patients in the Euroaspire Ii Substudy

    Otto Mayer, J Simon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2004•Cited by: 3•References: 18

Study objective: To ascertain, whether, conventional risk factors and readiness of coronary patients to modify their behaviour and to comply with recommended medication were associated with education in patients with established coronary heart disease. Design and methods: EUROASPIRE II was a cross sectional survey undertaken in 1999–2000 in 15 European countries to ascertain how effectively recommendations on coronary preventions are being follow…

  • Treatment of depression in cancer patients is associated with better life adaptation

    Dwight L Evans, Cheryl F McCartney et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1988

Major depression occurs in a significant number of cancer patients, and there is evidence that cancer patients with depression do not receive adequate antidepressant treatment. In an uncontrolled pilot study, the authors assess the degree of depression and the quality of life after the initiation of antidepressant medication treatment in 12 depressed cancer patients who received adequate antidepressant drugs and in 10 depressed cancer patients wh…

    Open Access•Jack A Rowell, J Simon et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1969

S ummary . Verbal reception and guided discovery techniques of teaching are compared in a classroom situation for effectiveness in promoting the formation of stable, usable, cognitive schemata in comparable groups of university students. The results indicate that explicit direction can produce performances superior to those resulting from a guided discovery approach for immediate recall, delayed retention and transfer. Tentative explanations of t…
