URB597 induces subtle changes to aggression in adult Lister Hooded rats
The endocannabinoid system has been implicated in both social and cognitive processing. The endocannabinoid metabolism inhibitor, URB597, dose-dependently improves non-social memory in adult Wistar and Sprague Dawley rats, whereas its effect on social interaction (SI) is affected by both rat strain and drug dose. Lister Hooded rats consistently respond differently to drug treatment in general compared with albino strains. This study sought to inv…
Dissociation and Depression in Eating Disorders
Measures of dissociation and depression were obtained from 26 women with anorexia nervosa, 18 with bulimia nervosa, and 31 non eating disordered controls using the Questionnaire of Experiences of Dissociation (Riley, 1988) and the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock & Erbaugh, 1961). Eating disordered subjects scored significantly higher on both dissociation and depression than non eating disordered subjects. A moderate positiv…
Dissociation in Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa
The present study employed the Riley Questionnaire of Experiences of Dissociation in order to assess degree of dissociation in females diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and bulimia. The subjects consisted of 26 anorexic and 18 bulimic females, and a non eating-disordered control group of 22 females. Results indicated that eating disordered subjects, considered together, had significantly higher dissociation scores than the non eating-disordered con…

Dimensions of the shadow
This study was designed to assess reaction to the nuclear threat on the part of students in six countries using a common instrument, the Nuclear Threat Index (NTI). The NTI is designed to report on three aspects of reactions: cognitive, affective, and behavioral. The study showed that children in each of the six nations reported accurate, realistic knowledge about the effects of nuclear war and that many children reported experiencing negative em…
Death Threat, Concern, Anxiety, Fear and Acceptance in Death-Involved and ‘At-Risk’ Groups
The Death Threat Index and four scales focussed on death concern, anxiety, fear and acceptance were applied to three groups: a death-involved group comprised of funeral directors, mortuary attendants and nurses; an ‘at-risk’ group comprised of parachutists and hang-gliders; and a control group whose contact with death was no more than a past and not recent bereavement. Consideration of the data focussed on the performance of the Index and the fou…

Some Reliability and Validity Considerations on Australian Data from the Death Anxiety Scale
Data derived from an administration of the Death Anxiety Scale [1] to Australian samples is analyzed with a view to providing comparative cross-cultural observations as well as some indication of realiability and validity in the Australian context. Measures of central tendency and dispersion and sex differences were found to be comparable with other surveys of similar groups to those of the present study. The Scale does not appear to suffer from …
An Australian Survey of Attitudes to Death
While there is considerable general interest in Australia in the ‘applied’ aspects of death such as bereavement, grief and mourning, there is almost no psychological or sociological interest and very little data. This paper reports some descriptive data derived from a survey using a questionnaire adapted from an American study. The aim of the paper is to provide a basis and a stimulus for an Australian interest in the psychology and sociology of …

Levelling-Sharpening in Aged Persons
A version of the Schematizing Test was administered to 63 elderly and 73 younger Ss. Results support the qualified conclusion that the levelling-sharpening principle of cognitive control can be extended to the upper age ranges and that the manner in which older Ss approach cognitive tasks must be considered in comparison of young and old groups
Isolation-Rearing Effects on Emotionality of Hooded Rats
Hooded rats housed in isolation were less emotional (defecated less) and more active (ambulated and reared more) in the open field under a variety of exposure conditions, than those housed in small groups. Isolate-housed Ss also spent more time in contact with another S during paired-exposure in the open field, which is taken as evidence of greater social-seeking behaviour in isolate-housed Ss .
