  • The New Middle East: Protest and Revolution in the Arab World

    Open Access•Fawaz Gerges, L Anderson et al.•BOOK•New Middle East•2013

The New Middle East is one of the first comprehensive books to critically examine the Arab popular uprisings of 2011–12. While these uprisings prompted a number of cursory publications, this volume contains meticulous and thoughtful reflections on the causes, drivers and effects of these seminal events on the internal, regional and international politics of the Middle East and North Africa. Although specific conditions in individual countries tha…

  • Lord Ripons Right-Hand Man in India 1880-1883

    Roger Owen, Roger G Owen•CHAPTER•Lord Cromer•2004

Evelyn Baring spent the month of July r 880 in London before going off to Glenmazaran Lodge, near Inverness in the north of Scotland, for a holiday some time in early August. Edward Lear was back in London at the time and records in his diary that Baring visited him for an hour on July. Then follows the comment: ‘ I suppose no one could be more unchanging in 20 years than EB; even if he had no changes of position his remaining so would be remarka…

  • A Noifolk Childhood 1841-1852

    Roger Owen, Roger G Owen•CHAPTER•Lord Cromer•2004

On 8 June 1841 census enumerators visited Cromer Hall, a newly built neo-Gothic house just a mile and a half from the little fishing town of Cromer in Norfolk. There they collected the form showing that the house contained two little boys, Master Thomas Baring, aged 2, and Master Evelyn Baring, aged 5 months, together with five female house servants, including Ann Cox, the boys’ nurse. The boys’ parents, Mr and Mrs Henry Baring, were away, as the…

  • Helping to Govern Malta with Many Excursions 1864-1867

    Roger Owen, Roger G Owen•CHAPTER•Lord Cromer•2004

After leaving Corfu, Baring returned quickly to England and then on to North America for a shooting trip and to see his brother Tom, who was working for Baring Brothers in New York. ‘ Now don’ t get shot and marry a squaw,’ wrote Lear. It proved to be sage advice as Earing’ s first act was to hasten down to Washington to observe some of the Civil War, then in its last stages, following General Grant’ s wilderness campaign in southern Virginia. Th…

    Roger Owen, Roger G Owen•CHAPTER•Lord Cromer•2004

Once he felt he had fully regained his health in the spring of 1908, Lord Cromer decided to enter British political life by taking up his seat in the House of Lords. He was now 67. He spent the next four years in the energetic pursuit of a wide variety of causes until his health began to break down again in 1912, when he was too ill to go to Scotland for the summer. This was followed by a fainting fit in the autumn of 191 3, and then another seri…

    Roger Owen, Roger G Owen•CHAPTER•Lord Cromer•2004

Evelyn Baring returned from India in May 1876 determined to marry and to settle down in England. All the obstacles had now been removed. He had managed to save part of his Indian salary and to this could be added a small legacy from his mother as well as the money Ethel had inherited from her father after his death and then the sale of his Puddington house in June 1875.Just as important, Sir Rowland’ s death seems to have removed the final obstac…

  • Years of Economic Success 1900-1904

    Roger Owen, Roger G Owen•CHAPTER•Lord Cromer•2004

The year 1898 marked a famous victory not only over the Khalifa’ s army but also over the French. In the first place France had been outmanoeuvred in its attempt to use the Caisse to prevent Egypt’ s reserves from being spent on both the military expedition and the proposed dam at Aswan. Secondly, the appearance of Cassel, as well as his ability to work with local bankers like the Suares brothers, who had formerly been closely identified with Fre…

Roger Owen, Roger G Owen•BOOK•The Middle East in the World…•2002

Examines the growth and transformation of the Middle East economy during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The text looks at how the region's economic structures were fundamentally altered by the growing impact of European trade and finance, and by the internal reforms of the rulers of Egypt. It also examines in detail the impact of this process on the four central areas of the Middle East. The result, the author argues, was the creation of a fi…
