On 8 June 1841 census enumerators visited Cromer Hall, a newly built neo-Gothic house just a mile and a half from the little fishing town of Cromer in Norfolk. There they collected the form showing that the house contained two little boys, Master Thomas Baring, aged 2, and Master Evelyn Baring, aged 5 months, together with five female house servants, including Ann Cox, the boys’ nurse. The boys’ parents, Mr and Mrs Henry Baring, were away, as they very often were, staying at their London House at 11 Berkeley Square with their one daughter, Cecilia, aged 8, and the twins, Robert and Richard, aged 7, looked after by fourteen live-in servants.
